Probably because web sex is quite boring because it's not actually sex at all. It's masturbation.

I actually quite like it. I enjoy the fantasy element, being whoever you want, and trying to write a hot yet believable story for someone else. It can be a major turn-on.

But a lot of people don't like it at all. For one thing, not that many people are all that good at it. It actually does take some measure of skill. Hell, just balancing stroking your cock and typing rationally is a skill all of its own. Secondly, well, it's work. You actually have to DO something. With porn and what not, you just lay back and jerk off. Text-based stuff makes you put in some effort. And thirdly, and probably most importantly, they started building webcams. Turn one on, aim it at your crotch, put on a headphone/mic if you like dirty talk, and away you go. The vast majority of people seem to like that better.

Technically it's not going out of style in chat rooms just like Jeimuzu suggested. I frequent chat rooms 1 or 2 times a day and everybody is still doing their thing. People are still using web cams to record doing solos in front of their private chatters just like they've been doing over the last 9 years. As long as you have thousands of horny people over the chat rooms, cyber sex is never going to die.
