So much for Democrats rolling over for dead-beat, racist Republicans. So much for Democrats ceding national security issues to the chicken hawk brigades of the GOP.

And that's how Democrats are going to beat Republicans between now and November 7, 2006.

The Republicans have gotten predictable. Before, Democrats running for office would be attacked or slandered by their Republican opponents, and some of the Dems were either too shocked at what they were hearing, or felt like if they ignored it the "comment" would go away.

NOT ANY MORE!

Here in Texas during the 2004 Congressional elections incumbent Chet Edwards, Democrat, was attacked by a former State Legislator Arlene Wolgemuth who was running to defeat him, and who had Bush's open support in that race.

She told reporters at a breakfast meet in greet in Waco one morning that, "Chet Edwards doesn't represent the family values of Central Texans."

When Chet Edwards was asked for his response at a luncheon the same day Chet responded, "And this from a woman, who when serving as a State Representative voted to cut the funding for the Child's Health Insurance Plan, leaving thousands of Texas families without health care for their children. If this is her idea of family values, then she's right I don't represent those type of family values."

She never recovered, and lost her bid to defeat Chet Edwards, even after Tom DeLay had redistricted Chet Edwards' district for his defeat!

George W. Bush is one of Democrat Chet Edwards more prominent constituents. ;)

Allen claimed that he "just made up" the word "macaca"? It has been widely reported that "macaca"is a Mid eastern term where Allen's mother was born and raised (Tunisia). Russert or Webb should have asked him about this, nobody just "makes up" a word like "macaca". I did think Russert was better than usual.

Well, one things for certain after seeing the video of Allen's use of the word, he seemed pretty comfortable tossing it around.

Russert also asked Allen about having displayed the Confederate flag and a noose in his office while governor. Allen said he had once seen the Confederate flag as a symbol of heritage and regional pride, but now recognizes it as a hateful image.

Okay. So~ how did he explain the noose?

Bonjour le General,

I guess I just assumed there might be a hidden message behind the image (so to speak)

Scary that one of these men will be representing the "great state of Virginia"

And to think that George Allen was considered a potential Presidential candidate? not that long ago

He's mega-scary and Webb is a snoozer and dishonest to boot, running ads that say Ronald Reagan would support him after Nancy asked him to take them off.

May the lesser person lose

I guess the job doesn't pay much.

Happy to read that Iman thought Tim Russert did a decent job though

^Chance, what is wrong with Webb? He served in the Reagan Administration from 1981 until 1988, when he resigned to protest Congressional budget cuts. Nancy Reagan and the Reagan library have a policy to object to RR's image being used in any campaign. Webb is running a video of RR praising Webb at Annapolis. I think that is a legitimate thing to do. Nancy should stick to reading the tea leaves.

I would think that Webb is your kind of Repub/Dem.

Gonna read more about him Iman - saw a bit of him on TV and thought he was pretty lackluster. Read about him using his Reagan connections to reach Allen Repubs and it seems insincere.

I read that:

He served as Sec of the Navy for 10 months - then abruptly quit - disagreeing severely with Reagan policies - his right to do so but then to point to the connection?

Nancy Reagan asked him to take the ad down - his wife - he refused.

Some of Webb's advisors have referred to Reagan as pompous, ignorant fool. Cruel, and their right to do so is unquestioned - but they worked for Webb who wants to use Reagan's support as a means of getting Virginia Repubs to chose him? Not right to have it both ways

I do prefer him over Allen who reminds me of the the Martin Sheen character in Deadzone. So, if a Virginian, I'd vote for Webb. But I think the Reagan play is a bad one.

Tell me more about Webb

Watched the complete hour today - really strange debate IMO.

Russert went after George Allen early and hard - accused him of supporting Bush way too much and doing so so as to not be "disloyal" (Webb quote). He interrupted Allen often. Looking for blood it seemed to me.

Good old Tim did the same to Webb later allaying my fears that he had read this board and overcompensated - LOL.

Allen and Webb seem more alike than not IMO. The only key difference was that Webb wants out of Iraq and is critical of the admin whereas Allen was blowing kisses up Bush's ass all the way.

Both men have had terrible moments in their careers:

Allen - Macaca - towards a Webb cameraman - Allen says he made the word up - and I thought his explanation seemed sincere - which would make him stupid instead of hateful - both are bad

Webb - said a long time ago women should not be in the military - and while apologetic to some extent - he's a little rough around the edges too

Allen couldn't get the pasted grin off his face - and struggled at times just getting out the words

Webb seems much sharper, more literate - not a lot of personality - I don't think the guy smiled the whole hour.

Webb says that affirmitive action is racism - interesting take for a dem

I could see where Webb is a reasonable vote for Repubs, but not the other way. I think Allen could be in big trouble.
