20 people? Wow. That is stamina. Even at their worst...I can't take my eyes off what some of the most rabid misanthropes on JUB are writing. It is like reading Right Wing Watch. You want to stab your eyes out....but you also want to understand the tenor of the times. I have to say though, you are one of those people who seems genuinely nice enough that it probably is good to avoid some of the crap or you'll just become cynical and 'bitter just like I apparently am.

I don't think you are cynical and bitter...I think you are smart and aware. I am glad you call them out because someone needs to...I just don't have the energy and inclination to do so. I feel a little physically ill when I read those guys which is why I have them on ignore.

I was behind the bar in a busy gay bar for 20 years so I have had a lot of experience with trolls face to face ...and that is probably why I have no patience for them anymore.

I'm loosely paraphrasing a fantastic post Alnitak once made on this subject.... things like deep rooted racism or homophobia do not yield and give way to rational arguments or objective facts. Ultimately they have to simply be shamed and harassed out of the domain of civil discussion until they wander off out into the woodworks and, eventually, die out.

People (and there's never a shortage of them) who line up to say something like "why are you bothering, you're wasting your time, he's not going to change his mind" about a rabid racist or phobe have completely missed the point. It's not about changing their mind. It's about showing 30 other, quieter cowards what they can expect to see if they voice certain kinds of views in public company.

I personally have people on ignore because they consistently post in ways that are only meant to start trouble or constantly insist on disrupting threads. It is hardly a weakness and more of not wanting to constantly reads someones bullshit.
