Well Aren't They Shithole Countries ?

Of course, if you really want to talk about irony... perhaps Trump should take his 6'3" 239 pound self for a walk around in Washington DC. He's got one of the highest crime areas in the US just down the street from his latest address.

Finally someone mentioned...even though Congress and Government always seemed enough reason to consider the city a shithole.

Inner city Detroit... well, that's just a shame. It's going to take a while before gentrification happens there. I still wouldn't dismiss it as a shithole even though I wouldn't stop at stop lights after dark in Detroit, though.

I was in Detroit several decades ago and saw on "Rehab Addict' with Nichole Curtis just how bad it has become since the 80s. Nichole buys older homes which have been vacant for years and brings them back to their original splendour. She never seems to have a problem selling them when she's done. Still, it's sad to see all of the empty and boarded up buildings in the downtown core.

Well, considering that Congress has kept DC in a limbo state- not defined as a state and without any real representation in Congress - and Congress overrules any efforts for it to run like a real city, perhaps it's not the city that is the shithole.

You probably don't want to look at these photos then. :(

The use of shithole by anyone is categorically a slur.

There isn't any debate about that, only whether the slur may be warranted.

Multiple places have been labelled shitholes in this thread. It is obvious the people of those places have been slurred. Duh.

Now you're the one redefining words.

Added in edit: I think your hatred of the current administration is clouding your opinion.

Tim Hortons is not fast food. It's the closest thing to fine dining you can get with paper napkins and plastic forks.

That varies. Burger joints that serve donuts would not be labelled as anything other in the U.S.

One would also conclude that Burger King's merger with them suggests birds of a feather.

Now you're the one redefining words.

No redefinition needed. Shithole is never anything but a slur. Listing the locales that were branded shitholes in this thread makes plain the bigotry against states, regions, nations, and their people.

So if I call your car a POS it's a slur then.

Of course it is. Slurs and epithets are synonyms. Although usually "slur" is not applied to anything but people.

noun:

1.
an insinuation or allegation about someone that is likely to insult them or damage their reputation.

A slur doesn't even have to be inaccurate to be a slur. Calling a drunkard a drunkard is nonetheless a slur. That is how it differs from slander.

Reminded me of looking at photos of Chernobyl.

The only 'insides' I see on 'Rehab Addict' is the inside of Nichol's houses, but there are often scenes of the buildings. When I was there, I was in the area of Cobo Hall and a short drive to our motel. My only 3 memories are getting stopped in customs and not being allowed into either country, almost getting mugged, and sitting in a fast food joint and watching people coming in from the street, going to the salad bar, and eating right out of the serving pots with the serving spoons.

I didn't say all of Mexico, I said the majority. I know there are lovely places like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.
And Queretaro, Puebla, even Guadalajara...I would really love to go to some of these cool places that aren't necessarily tourist destinations. I very much enjoyed Piedras Negras decades ago when I briefly visited there (1977?) - I felt that, unlike the other border cities I have so far not traveled beyond, I was seeing the real Mexico, and it was nice. PN is simply too far out of the way to be a "common" destination for Americans. This was before the cartels spread their warfare there later.

Mexico, like so many other places, is all a case of "so much planet, so little time" to see it...

Last time I was in Detroit, there were some side streets just east of Woodward and 7 Mile which were probably in dire need of repairs thirty years ago, and most of the original homes completely missing with just vacant lots. I have seen the same thing elsewhere in the city, too.

Yes...PERHAPS you are correct.:=D:

Hammer....meet nail.

The real shit hole exists is some of the people who helped create it....the ones in power..not so much the ones who live there is so many cases...

Precisely, the city became the prey of the Congress system/people, you know, like evil alien invaders do

Anyone believe what happened to Detroit will not only not be reversed, but might be just a foretaste of what will happen elsewhere? And I mean everywhere, Europe, USA..?

Well then with your strict unwavering definition of slur, calling the people you don't agree with a bigot, is in itself, a slur. Therefore you're also being a bigot.

Yes, bigot is a slur, even when accurately applied.

Definition of bigot
: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (such as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

Calling Trump a racist homophobe is a slur, and I'd stand by that too.

I would think it bigotry to label all JUB members as bigots, rather than the ones squealing with glee whenever given a chance to disparage blacks, muslims, regional populations, the poor, etc.

As I said from the time I joined this site over 10 years ago, it is no virtue to replace their hatred of a group of people with your hatred for a group of people. Hate actions. Hate government policies. Hate ignorance, but don't hate a people. When the world looks over, your angry face will look the same as the evil.

ANTIFA is the living proof that I was correct before it became a public fiasco.

I'm done trying to get you to understand.

You've got Trump hatred blinders on, and either too blind, or too stubborn to understand what the people who disagree with you are saying. Have a good day

The city is improving. There's a lot of techies moving in. The real estate is cheap and there's a gentrification effort going on. Houses than can't be remodeled are being torn down and some of the land is being recaptured for agricultural use.

The bigger challenge is going to be rebuilding a functional government. There was a period of shocking abuse- nepotism, extramarital affairs, graft, corruption- that led to the state of Michigan taking control of the city in 2013. The governor appointed a city manager- Kevyn Orr- who promptly put the city into bankrupty. Mr Orr was a lawyer and his law firm was selected as the legal representative for the city (purely coincidental, I'm sure). The city ended bankruptcy in 2014 and is still struggling to recover.

Or already happening elsewhere?
