here you can get "zovirax" a creme that helps healing the outbreak and can even prevent it when you feel that one is coming.
and if you are lucky your body can deal with it, and you won't have many outbreaks ;)

I've not had any luck with antiviral cremes. And according to a medical student friend of mine, the cremes only work if you start applying four days before an outbreak, so unless you're psychic.....

The best thing to do is to keep them dry. That will keep them smaller. A tiny bit of toothpaste dries them out. There are also patches (here they're branded Compeed) that can help, though the 'antiviral' qualities of them are greatly exaggerated. You will, however, keep the sore dry and they won't tingle as much.

My boyfriend has had Oral herpes (cold sores) for a while I guess, and I had read up on it and read that roughly half of the male population has it. This was when I noticed one of his outbreaks a few weeks back, but we had already been dating for a year or so. He told me what it was then, and I was OK with it after reading. I now have an outbreak myself :/ I guess my question is, is there any OTC treatment to relieve or prevent the outbreaks?

You need to Detox your whole system...Cleanse the body naturally and it will heal itself...Your boyfriend has to Detox as well...As of right now all you're doing is re-infecting each other...

You both need internal Detoxification for a few weeks..

^ oh yeah .. and also do not miss drinking your own urine, look into colored light, wear semi-precious stones on the body, drink herbal tea and adjust the room for a better chi

^OK, I see what you're saying.

But I do have to say, the only times I've had a cold sore is when I'm stressed.

Usually it's just from lack of sleep, sometimes from worry about finances, love life, etc..

So anything that relieves stress and is calming can be as good as any drug.....

Your boyfriend has Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) which is different that the genital herpes (HSV-2) that everyone thinks of when you say "herpes". About 70% of people in the US test positive for exposure to HSV-1- it's a very common infection and is usually acquired in childhood.

Some people with HSV1 have frequent breakouts that can be triggered by just about anything - stress, colds, sunlight, etc. But most people who have it have rare breakouts or no breakouts at all.

You'll need to see whether you have frequent breakouts to determine what treatment is best for you. For people who break out often, oral medications like valacyclovir (Valtrex) and acyclovir (Zovirax) seem to work best. These drugs are also available in a cream but it doesn't seem to be as effective at preventing breakouts as the pills. If you're one of the people who doesn't have frequent breakouts, then your best bet is to just avoid things that trigger the breakouts.

Anything that weakens the immune system, including stress - yes :)
But this whole "detox" esoterica is just another money sink for the gullible. Your body "detoxes" itself if you just stop feeding it bad stuff.

^Agreed, mostly.

The best "detox" for me is two consecutive nights of good sleep.... Heaven.

...LOL...Corny I didnt know you were into comedy?....Well..I was just throwing out helpful ideas....I never said I knew anything about drinking urine or wearing stones found in anybodys drive-way......You said that..

Certain Herbs will help kill the virus.. Pau D' Arco, Black Walnut, Sage, Cascara Sagrada, Cayenne, Cloves, Hyssop, Thyme taken together will kill the virus. Exercise and a healthy Diet also helps the immune system fight off infections naturally...

This is an OPEN forum to discuss ways to help HEAL is it not?

of course it is - unless you are advocating something dangerous you can say what you want. and i shared my opinion on your proposal.
and one thing is sure - if you have herpes, you have it. none of those herbs or any other vodooo will kill the virus, it just helps keeping it on the low. if you actually would have a working cure for herpes you would be rich.

Corny why are you assuming anything? You're assuming that i'm advocating a dangerous product and you're assuming that I'm poor. It sounds like you're very upset and I find that very odd..Everyone has made a post in this thread and you're the one that's coming across as angry and pissed off..

Uh what?
I did not say that you advocated something dangerous NOR did I assume that you are poor. At least not how you interpreted it, but I think I do not need to write "super super super super rich" (which I assume you aren't because it's just statistically plausible) so that you can get the picture that a CURE for herpes would be a major break-through.
Of course if you want to you can read a lot of things I didn't say or mean into harmless words.

Thanks Kara, but I thought that Oral Herpes could be either or HSV-1 or HSV-2? I do know about HSV-1 being pretty common, and HSV-2 usually being Genital Herpes, but can't HSV-2 be contracted orally and create "cold sores" around the mouth?

I might have had it before, as I remember having sores around my mouth before. However this was many many years ago, and they were different sores(didn't have the same aspect, so maybe not cold sores). But it seems more likely as my boyfriend had his outbreak not long ago, and that we had sexual contact, that I have contracted it from him.

As for him and I "reinfecting" ourselves, that is not going to happen, since we probably won't see each other for maybe 4-6 weeks. I am worried though, as I might be having sexual contact with someone else. How long after outbreak should I wait before pursuing sexual contact (for all you judgemental types, I'm in a LDR, and my boyfriend is made aware of my sexual contact, and I use condoms, and I haven't yet slept with anyone else.) ? Is there an OTC medication that will diminish/prevent the risk of infecting someone who isn't infected with HSV?

Reinfection isn't an issue. Once you're exposed to HSV, you're infected for life which is the case for many of the herpes virus. The virus lays dormant in your nerve endings.

If you had cold sores when you were younger then it's more likely that you're having a recurrence and this is not a new infection.

You can get HSV-2 on your mouth and you can get HSV-1 on your genitals but it's not as common. These virus strains have mutated to adapt to their particular area of infection and they're more likely to infect the site that they have adapted to.

A few things.

If the sore is on the INSIDE of your mouth, it is most likely not herpes, but rather a canker sore, which is an ulcer (of which the cause is not known) that has nothing to do with herpes. Herpes will be on the lips, nose, chin or even the fingers.

HSV1 and HSV2 can both cause oral or genital herpes. HSV1 is more common orally (and upwards of 2/3s of adults have been infected) and HSV2 more commonly genitally. Easy solution is to avoid contact during a flare up of either.

As mentioned above, once you are infected with a herpes virus, you have it for life (oral/genital herpes, chickenpox, EBV, CMV, etc) and they can reactivate at random, most often due to stress (same is true for shingles and mono recurrences).

Herbal remedies may work for some people, and if you're one of them great, but most are medically unproven and can often be attributed to false cause/effect inferences or placebo effects. Also, the notion that some magical combination of herbs can somehow 'kill' the virus is ridiculous. If that were true, some pharm company would have patented it and would be swimming in pools of money.

Best treatment for oral herpes is OTC meds such as abreva or go to your doctor and get some acyclovir. These meds work best if you start at the FIRST sign of an outbreak, usually a tingling sensation or a sense of a lump about to form. Even untreated, they usually go away in a week or two and are a minor hassle.

The very best way I've found to minimize the appearance and duration of the infection is this:

before it has formed

Act as soon as you feel any kind of tingling sensation (pre sore). The quicker you act the less tissue is damaged.

I pop two famvir and then I sort of forget about it... but you should probably follow the label =)

Heat the sore up. Sounds weird but I read that the virus is killed at over such and such degrees. I like to heat water up (not boiling or anything) and go to sip but instead just let the water hit sore.

After doind this for 15-30 I dry it off and use hydrogen peroxide.

From then on I just let it stay as dry as possible.

I pop a pill before bed and put a small amount of abreva on.

Using this method it will typically go by completely unnoticed. You still shouldn't be kissing anyone though.

After it has formed

You are kind of screwed. Just pop the pills your doc prescribes and apply abreva.

Still use the hot water method

Keep it dry until it started to get hard and scabby then keep it moisturized.

For prevention

take L-Lysine supplements. I know people who swear by them claiming they practically never break out.... I'm too lazy.

I think you are contagious as long as there is an open wound. however I can't help but think the blister is pretty contagious as well. I'd say once it is in the scabby phase and you no longer feel that cold sore tingle you are probably safe... but who wants to kiss mr. scabby mouth.

Anyway... best of luck.

Both oral herpes (HSV 1) and genital herpes (HSV 2) ARE transmittable when sores are not present! Someone with genital herpes will shed the virus up to, I believe, 10% of the time when sores are not present, maybe more. HSV 1 sheds the virus when sores are not present at a lower rate. The vast majority of people who contract HSV 2 do so when they come into contact with someone who does not have sores. Many people with HSV 2 never develop any symptoms, but may still infect their sex partners if they have sex on a day they are shedding the virus.

Actually, one can get HSV 1 (oral herpes) on the genitals and anus. In fact, almost 50% of genital herpes infections are now HSV 1.
