Have a look around and buy something you like, that's original, and if possible buy it from the artist.
People who have exhibited at a decent gallery will generally be worth more, but up and comers who are determined to have a career can be wise too - plus there's the feel-good factor.

He really likes the Hudson River School genre, so I'm looking for one of those....I found one on eBay that was nice but the sale ended and now it's gone.....

In this country, with now more than 40% of people being able to legally marry WHERE THEY LIVE is a transcendentally marvelous thing. I'm very happy for you! (And, as an aside, it was great meeting you guys in Midtown only a couple months ago!)
