Sin City Cock-Sucker!!
"We will be on the lookout for shepherds, wise men and an unusually bright star in the sky over Chester Zoo in London where Sungai, a female Komodo Dragon has given birth, without being fertilized by a male dragon!
Yes, you read that statement correctly, the female did NOT have any male sperm to fertilize her eggs, she did it ALL by herself.
Although other lizard species are known to be able to self-fertilize, this is the first time this has ever been reported in Komodo dragons in captivity or otherwise, either. I guess what we have here is an immaculate conception, and because the eggs were laid in May of 2006 and hatched around Christmas time......... (note the length of gestation) how bizzare! lol
Self-fertilization in this way is called parthenogensis, where the species makes a copy of it's own genetic code.....well, it happened, cause we now have four little dragonettes waddling around with their mom....
I don't know how much you know about Komodo Lizards; but it is the world's largest lizard, with adult males reaching up to three meters long and weighing up to 90 kilos. The dragon is found on the Indonesian Islands of Komodo, Rinca, Gili Motang and Flores. The dragon's numbers have dwindled to around 6,000, as a result of poaching and invasive species.
Have you ever seen a Komodo Dragon? Here you go........one only a mother could love!!! lol
Sorry, but I thought this was just amazing; thus posting in Hot Topics, if it's NOT appropo, please re-post otherwise....
