What Are McCain's Views On Gays?

He has been flip flopping on this issue. But presently, he doesn't believe in may marriage, but he believes in civil union, and he believes state should decide the issue.

And he supported the Arizona amendment. And he opposes repeal of DOMA Section 3. So he wants the states to forbid gay marriages and the federal government to limit marriage to opposite-sex couples for purposes of federal law.

I don't see the flip flop.

By the way, do you happen to have a site for his supporting civil unions? That might come in handy in the general election.

I found an article reporting on McCain's opposition to civil unions.

On ABC's "This Week," host George Stephanopoulos asked McCain why he supported the [amendment], saying it "actually denied any government benefits to civil unions or domestic partnerships. Are you against civil unions for gay couples?"

First McCain said: "No, I'm not."

"I think that initiative did allow for people to join in legal agreements such as power of attorney and others," he said. "I think that there was a difference of opinion on the interpretation of that constitutional amendment in Arizona."

"So you're for civil unions?" Stephanopoulos asked.

"No," he said. "I do not believe gay marriage should be legal. I do not believe gay marriage should be legal," he repeated. "But I do believe that people ought to be able to enter into contracts, exchange powers of attorney, other ways that people have relationships can enter into."

Later, he came back: "I just want to point out again: I believe that gay marriage should not be legal. OK?"

He is for our paying lawyers to draft wills, powers of attorney, etc., etc. the effect of which could be had a minimal cost through marriage. He opposes joint income tax returns for gay couples, immigration sponsorship for gay partners, social security survivor benefits, spousal privilege from testifying, etc., etc. Those things can't be had with legal documents.

hm what about banning heterosexual marriage, but legalizing homosexual marriage? i guess it would be great that way, now let's assume that 20% of people are gay (which is very high estimation) it still would be a lot better for all those conservatives who want save money-spending by denying people benefits of marriage.

I begin to wonder if McCain might not be a candidate for assassination, if:

1. he gets elected
2. he turns out to be too much like Bush
3. someone decides enough is enough


Under Bush I think we're darned close to being in a situation where it's time to dust off the right of insurrection -- if McCain were to continue what Bush has begun....

Pluses: McCain met with Log Cabin in 1999 during his earlier presidential bid and expressed distaste for anti-gay discrimination. He's hired openly gay Senate and campaign staffers.

When U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe, a fellow Arizona Republican, came out in 1996, McCain rushed to supportively declare that Kolbe "has the respect and appreciation of most Arizonans."

In response to a push by the gay Human Rights Campaign, McCain adopted a written policy saying he doesn't discriminate against gay employees.

And, in both 2004 and 2006, he voted against and spoke out against amending the U.S. Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

During the recent Florida primary, his campaign placed anti-gay "robo" calls against Romney. The plus is that, according to a knowledgeable source, McCain never saw or approved the script, and senior staff stopped them.

Minuses: He opposes gay marriage, campaigned for an unsuccessful amendment to Arizona's constitution in 2006 that would have prevented recognition of coupled relationships other than male-female marriages and has said he'd support amending the U.S Constitution if federal courts order gay marriage.

He voted in 1993 for Don't Ask, Don't Tell and still opposes lifting that ban on gays serving openly in the military. In 1996 votes, he supported denying spousal benefits to married gay couples and opposed outlawing anti-gay job discrimination.

Although even he admitted that Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell was a poor compromise at the start of his Presidency, it was still much better the previous policy.

And certainly much better than a coalition (more Repugs than Demons) were THREATENING to pass, which would have made a federal mandate that the military never be allowed to hire gays, which is a step or two above even the previous policy.

Before DADT, am I correct in thinking it wasn't actually a federal statute which caused them to kick gays out, but the military's own policies which they could choose whether or not to enforce?

If I remember correctly, Senator Sam Nunn (D.-GA) was taking the leadership on the DADT initiative, and threatening, if DADT wasn't enacted, to make sure the much more restrictive law would get enacted. One of Bill Clinton's first actions in office was to try to overturn the antigay military policy COMPLETELY, then that coalition came up with this dire and toxic choice. Congress was all set to write discrimination into federal law, whether it was discrimination-light (DADT), or discrimination-heavy (complete and total ban on gays in the military).

Please correct me, somebody, if I have this history wrong.

It amazes me how many gays in our community will attack Republicans on everything anti-gay they do while giving a pass to every Democrat's anti-gay crap. I think just because a person has a "D" after their name their ingorance should not be ignored.

Hillary Clinton said a few years ago on that she was "still evolving" on gay marriage.

Obama last year said he was against gay marriage too.

Al Gore, the big liberal, recently said he is coming around to gay marriage after decades of years of being anti-gay along with his congressional and senatorial beliefs of pro-gun, anti-abortion etc.

The homophobic, I have never had a job in my life Jesse Jackson and the black community are the biggest group against gay marriage and legal protections yet they vote Democrat.

Everyone seems to act like the R group is all bad and the D group is all good. I work with a lot of Republicans where I am completely out to all 120 people. And I will tell you this, many many many of those Republican's believe it is wrong to not allow gays to serve in the military, it is wrong to fire/not hire someone because they are gay, and many believe gays should have at least some type of partnership whatever one wants to call it. You see, I think it is important for gays to be in both parties so one party does not take a group of people for granted. We can shape, form, move the agenda of gay people forward for humanity. That is how you change opinions eventually. And trust me, I have had many neantherdals as I call them, warm up to me at work . In the end, they honestly do not care as long as you are a good person overall.

My dad told me a few years ago that "gays should be allowed to marry and be miserable just like heterosexuals." ha ha.

Anyone hoping for a true 3rd party candidate that isn't all wishy washy when it comes to the gay community??? A third party could help shape the other two party's agenda.

WHat everyone seems to miss here is RELIGION.

This is the difference between Dems & Repugs. The Republicans would essentially make US a christian state. Hillary has spoken out many times for the reinstatement of seperation of church and state. bush and the other douchebags have made significant progress towards a religious republic.

Until we have a true seperation of church and state we will never have any equality because once the Radical Christian Fundamentalist Terrorists succeed in banning gay people they will go after the Muslims, the Jews, and eventually YOU.

America is filled with damned fools who are oblivious to these monsters who are successfully changing our government before our very eyes. Anyone who caters to them is indeed the enemy and EVERY repug caters to them.
If a repug would state that s/he believes in seperation of church and state, this would force the gay issue and the abortion issue and so much more.

Wow, so many ignorant things in this post, so I'll only address what's worth addressing.

There are many more issues affecting gay americans than just gay marriage. Repealing DOMA, ENDA, Hate Crimes Act, DADT--ALL things that Obama and Hillary support--even Edwards, but the Republican candidates don't.

So you just wasted a whole lot of typing.
