  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What are some of the features in your car do you never use?

I haven't used the passenger ejection seat. Yet.

"Over Drive" button - No idea what it's for.

Me either...

It's a "D" on my gearshift which I guess means it overrides the automatic transmission and shifts gears when you want them to....

But, without a clutch, HOW are you supposed change gears at all ?

It remains a mystery to me.

Ahh, well....

I've never used the rear dvd players and honestly don't know how they work. They were standard equipment. There is also a button for automatic switching between high and low beam headlights. I would rather control my own gas pedel so I don't use the cruise control. I also hardly ever use the sunroof. I thought I wouldn't use the heated steering wheel but it has become one of my favorites!! Oh! and the tow hitch!!

 I dunno... it's a mystery!!!

I don't use my hitch for towing, but I made sure I have one in there. It's a great visual detourant for tail gaiters. I've been rear ended enough times I like the added protection of it sticking out back there. Also nice if you're not great at backing up (like I am). I'd rather hit the hitch then the back of my truck. It's also a nice step, if you intend to climb into the back of your truck. Just watch your shins walking around the back.

Guys at work call them "Stingers". Kinda cute. ..| ;)

I get to drive a lot of cars from work, however on my personal car;

I use everything, although it is a manual (stick-shift) with no cruise control. the only thing I don't or rarely use is the back seats.

On company cars I use everything, from data loggers to cruise control and rear fog lights (they are actually on many japanese and korean cars).

The only thing I have never used is the refrigerated glove-box in the Hyundai i30. I just don't understand it.

The brakes.

When idiots pull out in front of me in the intersection, as if they were under the yellow light (which they weren't), I don't brake. Let 'em die, or fear they've come damned close to it.

:rotflmao: or speed up.

A switch with (N - A/T - P) on it.

It has something to do with positive traction and getting out of a muddy ditch or something. Anyway, I know to leave it in 'N' unless I get trapped in a ditch.

"Over Drive" button - No idea what it's for.

Usually it will be an over-drive off (O/D or O/D off) which just means it keeps it 1 gear lower, good for say 45-50mph hills in a 4-cylinder.

eg. If your car is a 4-speed automatic and the gears say 1-2-d (or l-2-d) it will technically keep it going to a maximum of 3 instead of D(4).

In the 80's however, this was more fun!

Especially on a Mitsu colt turbo.

All of them. I haven't had a car since 1984.

This (2004)

I'm trying to remember what I used when I last had a car. I feel like all the basic driving functions plus radio, I used. It wasn't the most modern car out there so it didn't have any crazy features (it was a '91 Cadillac).
Mine probably had even less features. It was a Dodge Omni.

I used pretty much everything it had:

Radio (both AM & FM) - there wasn't even an audio cassette player in it
Seat belts - no airbags
Rear window defrost - no rear windshield wiper
Standard transmission
Power Steering and Brakes
Ashtray and cigarette lighter
Rearview mirror day/night toggle

It didn't have air conditioning or power mirrors or anti-lock brakes. No armrests. No cup holders. I had to buy one that fit over the console.

It got me from here to there, and I had to do all the driving

I don't know what the overdrive button is for, but I'm pretty sure I've turned it on or off a few times over the years. Other than that, I've used everything in that car... maybe not for what it was intended to be used, but I use it... the ashtray is where I keep parking-meter change, I use the cigarette lighter socket to charge my phone, I've hung clothes on the chicken-bars and the little thingie in the back seat that's supposed to anchor a child seat.

The only thing I have yet to use is the escape switch in the trunk. But I do get a kick out of the graphic on the tag, so I'm glad it's there.

Run away, little man! Run away!

I don't know. I have a lot of buttons on the instrument panel I don't pay attention to but don't know what they're for. A pic from the web here but my car is similar to it:

It has a trip computer but I don't use it much. Just to check the mileage once in a while.

Well Borg69, the hitch would be good for backing up and not hitting things but when it has a cover on it....well....it doesn't help. How do I know??? Backing into a parking spot at Starbucks right after I got it and I backed into a retaining wall!! lol! It was at bumper height but there none the less and I knew it. I even have parking assist and rearview camera. The way I see it now the hitch cover won't get stolen since it has scratches, however, the center caps have already been the subject of a theives desire. So now I have new caps, cap locks and wheel locks. Oh well. I do like the name "stingers" for them though!!!

My vehicle is 1998 model so no fancy thingamajigers in there.

CD player (I use the cigarette function for my iPod)
1 and 2 gear (I live in Florida)

Ashtray next to cupholder is sometimes used for my phone or cash, so it does technically get used.

i have a lane departure device that somehow senses when the car is leaving its lane without a signal. It vibrates the steering wheel. I used it once, it annoyed me and i never used it again.....so there

- mp3 connector
- rear passenger vents
- child safety seat anchor

I drive a 2007 Chevy Impala. It has everything I think a car should have without being too busy. I guess I use most of it..

Off the top of my head I'd say, cruise control( except on long trips) Not too big on all the different seating options though.I like to set it and forget it..Oh yeah, and I rarely use the backseat..

My car looks exactly like this one..

I don't smoke, so never use the lighter or ashtray. The right seat has never been used. I've never used the cup holders. I've never used the differential lock, I will if I need it, just haven't so far. I've never used the side curtain airbag cutoff switch, that's for extreme off road conditions, and I don't off road. I seldom use the AC, but I have a few times. Not many extra features on this truck, why pay for stuff I'll never use...

The radio or CD player. When I get in the car if I want to hear something I play my iPod Touch.

I don't smoke, but my car doesn't have an ashtray or cigarette lighter, but it does have too electrical car outlets for charges and stuff.

I don't use my cruise control too often, but for long rides I love it.

I don't use the 1 or 2 gears on the car, I just use D, R, and P.

My car didn't come with an ashtray but would not have used that. erm…so basically I didn't use a feature my car didn't have.

Uhmmm…haven't used the airbags thank god, good call frankfrank

And i haven't used the multi cd changer though apparently the husband put some discs in there or something.

Everything's on the iAppliance which I just plug into the aux port.

OH! and the "tonneau cover" has sat propped up in the foyer to the garage since we brought the car home. What the fuck is a "tonneau cover" anyway? Okay I know what it is; it's a fabric lid for the cargo compartment, but who needs it? And why the hell is it called that? I'm not covering any "tonneau," you can be damned sure of that.

There's number of functions on the trip computer that I don't use. The voice activated feature for dialing the phone, changing radio stations and using the nav system is about useless as well.
