Maurice (Shout out to Rupert Graves. Shout out to Rupert Graves nude! Classic gay themed movie, not sure how this got made during the 80s when they have a hard time making a gay themed flick of this quality even today. Runs very long and thus can be slow in parts, but it's worth it. What do you do when your best friend and love interest abruptly cuts off your relationship, marries a woman, and leaves you pretty much alone in a world where there is no real homosexual community, homosexual behaviour is punishable by prison time and homosexuality is treated as a disease)
The Man I Love( French Flick, lots of charisma, if you can get a hold of it, you should definitely see it. It's hard to say much about it without giving some of it away. )
Mysterious Skin (deals with the consequences of childhood sexual abuse on two teenagers. The main character is gay but that's really only tangential to the main storyline. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a much better actor than people give him credit for. He was awesome in this, he had tremendous screen presence. Very good movie.
C.R.A.Z.Y.(French Canadian flick. This was just plain great. Easily one of the best gay themed movies I've ever seen. It's a very good movie period, forget the gay interest part of it. Tons of charisma, just oozes it. Highly recommended.
Heights(just saw it yesterday, I may be overrating it just because its fresh on my mind, but I thought it was good, and Glenn Close kicks ass.)
Speedway Junky(First gay themed movie I ever saw, so I've got a soft spot for it. I can't tell if it's really as good as I think it is or not. Jesse Bradford and Jordan Brower are my boys.)
My Own Private Idaho(River Phoenix had major screen presence and Keanu used to know how to act(at least a little). Script was odd though. Direction was great.
Latter Days (I liked it. Steve Sandvoss is gorgeous. I'm having painful flashbacks of a music video montage tieing everything together towards the end though <<<shudders>>>. Very good by gay themed movie standards. It is known to pull the heartstrings of some of those who struggle to reconcile their religious beliefs with their sexuality.
The Trip (Okay, I hate to say it, but this one got to me a bit. I think the other movies I mentioned might be better quality, but still, I had to mention this one. Just one quote:
Beverly: So, Alan tells me you're a homosexual.
Tommy: Only because there was nothing good on television.
Beverly: Well, I just find it so intriguing.
Tommy: Not always, Liberace for example.
Beverly: Liberace is a homosexual?
Tommy: Sadly, yes.
Okay, that's it for me. I've seen many a gay themed flick, but these are the ones that stick out off the top of my head.
