Attention What are you doing at the moment? 2024-25

Ok I joined the french press coffee bandwagon. So good! I’m having a homemade Starbucks caramel macchiato this morning.

Why does the french press coffee smell so much better? The whole house smells like a coffee shop
I use a French Press as well now that I'm making coffee for just me.

I'm hooked on Cameron's ground coffee and the French press. So consistent it is.

Just back from loading a rick of hardwood. I feel a lot less apprehensive about the polar freeze coming. Southern states are awful for snow or ice, and if power goes out, I think I can heat for a week.

About to go out and mow and vac up leaves and limbs so the yard is perfectly clean again. If it snows, I intend on rolling a snowman that is not dirty with detritus.

^ I am not going to snicker.

But we call that Indian Summer.

I am praying that the power holds today, because I am so sick, I would never get out there to connect the generator...and I realize both our nice space heaters are at the office when the furnace had to have the coil replaced.

So far so good from the most recent Texas blow...just some snow and rain but not devastating freezing rain.

The snow thundershowers are always a treat.

I lived in Alaska. I'm familiar.

And, I only wore a jersey hoodie and jeans, so wasn't Christmas Story bundled or anything.

It looks fine out there. I am going to get the garage in shape today and get my stuff put away in there and will have a straight run from the pickup to the wood stove across the length of the house in the basement, as I expect to burn it all week. Got it tarped since we're expecting 3-5 inches, and no temps above freezing until Thursday, and then rain to make a mess of it all. That rick will be at least half gone.

Will work from home most of the week, unusual for me. Going to try to save the shrubs after losing several at these temps last year. May lay down some Christmas lights to warm the air there overnight Monday and after.

I invited my adopted neighbor family over for brunch but have yet to hear back from them.

I picked up fresh bagels and smoked salmon along with a bunch of spreads.

I have home fry potatoes ready to go and I cooked 2 pounds of maple bacon and I have spicy turkey sausage and I have pans ready for French toast or an omelette.

Found good strawberries and I made Fluff dip for the kid. I fresh squeezed Orange juice and have bakery almond paste and apricot Danishes.

I will probably have a strong bloody Mary and call it a day

The things I do for people.

:)

I am having trouble getting warm today...so I am soon going to go up for a nice hot shower and then jump right into bed in fresh warm sweats to have a read and my last mid-aft nap before back to work.

just shut our ac off, speed all the winders to air this pig pen out....reading the JUB having a cawfee....

Finished reading my mystery novel and had a very light nap...but finally warmed up after my nice hot shower.

I always dislike the period where you are recovering from a bout of pneumonia or other miserable illness.

You know you have to re-engage with the world and that (mercifully or not) you aren't going to expire...but it all has a tinge of unreality to it. Still don't feel all that good but there's no reason to malinger.

And now you are behind a week or so in work and life.

I dug into the chest freezer looking for something. Found the sausages.
I have never defrosted this freezer and it is, oh, 27 years old? I do need to defrost it because I'm such a clever boy that I had a towel on the lid to keep it from being scratched. But.... the lid is full of frost because of that. It's a bitch trying to hold the lid open and look for stuff in the freezer. I noticed one of the frost chunks was looking "drawn away" from the wall. So I got an old plastic spatula and popped that chunk off. Then I did the rest. I still need to defrost it and see if that makes the lid stay up.

Who am I kidding? Odds are I will never defrost this freezer and will bitch about the lid for another 25 years.

I had to pull out the humidifier. It’s feeling cold in the house even at 72F. It’s already feeling better.
Great minds. I spent the day cleaning the garage, getting in the riding mower, hauling wood in, securing the faucets, and ran to work to get my laptop.

BUT, one of the things I remembered to do was bring the big humidifier upstairs to warm the house. Got the stove downstairs and the fireplace upstairs both going. The heat pumps couldn't get the house up past 66.

I even tried the emergency heat and it didn't climb much. Both units have it though, so will probably have to switch to it Tuesday.

I have my heat pump set to go to back-up heat at 28f. Maybe 25f. I'm too lazy to go look. Default setting was 40f I think. The constant squealing when the compressor switches to defrosting the outside coils bugs me a lot.

I have just 10k of back-up heat. More required another run from the breaker box, which I could have done, but the panel is full. Huh. The old "just a/c" system had 15k of heat and hearing the transformer on the pole sounding like the warp engines in Star Trek was cool but real spooky. So, 10k it is.

The pellet stove heats the living room to 70f on a low setting. I can turn it up. I have a fan on the floor that pulls air from the bedroom wing of the house so the back of the house is around 66f. Makes it cold in the dining room, but. The heat pump runs once in a while on back-up heat. Stirs up all of the air.

It's 17f outside. I still have to walk the dogs. That should not be a tour around the place tonight.

I start up the humidifier as soon as heating season starts. Makes it feel 3 or 4 degrees F warmer. Not only is it more comfortable, but I save money, as I don't have to crank the heat up. This time of year the humidifier is using about 4 gallons of water a day.

I have made it through the first half day back at my desk in the office...without quite as much anxiety as I had actually anticipated.

But now I am ready to go home for an afternoon nap.

So that was nice...Mizzy came and tucked in for awhile.

I tried another run at pouring a small dark rum before dinner and I think I really may have lost this taste for it for good.

I poured most of it down the drain.

I made crispy chicken thighs with a garlic-butter sauce for dinner, with steamed made and a cucumber and tomato salad.
