After having my two great nephews here at Christmas, I realize I am still wholly ambivalent about having children of one's own. I have one neice and one nephew.

Having a kid around isn’t all that bad. 8 years ago when mine came into my life I couldn’t wait until her mom picked her up. Now we both enjoy all the time we get to spend together. The weather kept us apart over Christmas, the first time she wasn’t here in those 8 years. It was really hard for both of us.

You got to be an honourary Dad just by living through the teenage years.

I never wanted kids. If I had them they would hate my guts because I am overprotective in general.

These answers make me wonder how many straight men don’t want kids either , yet end up having them anyway.

I always knew having a child was not in my future. Would I have been a good dad? Yes. I see it through my nieces and nephews as well as my friends kids.
It wasn't in the cards for me. My nieces and nephews and my friends kids always loved to be around me. I would listen to them and try to guide them. I was the fun one... I let them be kids and indulged them. I was the favorite uncle. Not that they didn't get that from their parents, but someone they could always trust. The age groups are different because of my siblings ages. I have nieces and nephews in their 40's as well as nieces and nephews in their late teens and early 20's The great nieces and nephews are the same age as my youngest sister kids. Late teens early 20's. It is a great journey.
