A common reaction to the United States in many countries around the world is to think "Gee, it's got a lot of things going for it, and it regularly makes substantial contributions to everyone's enjoyment of the world." If you probe them, "Do you think that makes the US the number one country in the world?" the non-American will hmmm and hawww...and look puzzled and say..."Well I hadn't thought of it like that....no, not really. I'm not sure the question makes any sense. That's not how these things work."

At which point a passing American who overhears that remark will far too often hear it as "We hate the US and everything that it stands for!!!!" Why? Because we're secretly jealous!!!!!!

This "all or nothing" mentality is, to a certain subtle nuanced degree, just a bit too prominent in the States.
 
Really, so a westernized liberal democracy that attempts to make peace is almost as bad as despotic regimes that abuse and starve their people and threaten nuclear annihilation? Yeah, people of the world are so smart.
