  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What did people use before TP?

If the Chinese invented paper, what did other people use to wipe before their invention spread? Ok, some cultures still use water - which ones? - but what about the ones who wipe today? Well-traveled JUBbers, can we hear from you?

I would guess they use(d) your tongue.

^ I would be interested in being able to read that. (And, I don't mean to sound as "pervy" as that might sound.)

I remember using both Sears and Wards catalogues in our outhouse.

My great-grandmother's house did not have indoor plumbing until after World War II. I remember hearing stories told by my grandmother and my father of using her outhouse and wiping with the Montgomery Ward or Sears Catalogue.

JC Penney didn't get into the catalogue business until 1962.

Wards and Sears were the most common catalogue.

Wards dates back to the 1870's and Sears was founded in 1886.

And in Canada, I would guess that it would have been Eaton's catalogue to wipe yourself with...

But Sears has the nice Craftsman tools, and Mervyn's..... Well, they's gone. That just leaves JC Penney's.

Canada sounds scary..... Eaton shitwipes...... If the pronunciation is off by just a bit at the wrong spot....... It could leave a bad taste in your mouth! :rotflmao:

Sir Ron,
My grandparent's farm house in Indiana didn't get an indoor bathroom until 1956.
Even at that, the outhouse stood tall as the second bath as it were.

Years later - I was an adult by then - my grandmother said how she'd sometimes go out to the outhouse instead of the indoor toilet just to get away from the crowd - a family of 7 kids plus . . . can't say as I blame her.

And, yes, I knew about the left ("sinister") hand in the Middle East - all that sand and not too many leaves.
We Southpaws are seen as real infidels - so says one of the guys in our yard at work - who also retired this past year from the Reserves as 1st Sgt, having served in the Middle East twice.
