  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What do you blame proposition 8's passing on?

"The California legislature had nothing to do with this. In fact they voted twice to approve marriage equality, but it was vetoed both times by the Republican governor."

What do you mean? The Surpreme Court of California declared it to be unconstitutional (made up mostly of Republicans). Also, from what I understand Arnold S. seems to be much more open to gay marriage now.

I mean what I said. The California legislature voted twice for mariage equality and he vetoed it both times. Look it up.

He said "the people" should decide this.

As a politician he knew it would be the safest thing to say. Whatever his private views are on the matter, he did not want to alienate his fellow Republicans.

(His wife, Maria Shriver has endorsed marriage equality, as have the entire Kennedy clan.)

It was after all this happened that the California Supreme court decided in favor of marraige equality.

My question was not answered, so I shall answer it: None.

Women's rights and equality for black people were not given by the American people. If it had been put forth to the public for a majority, it most likely wouldn't have passed. These rights had to be given by the courts and by Congress.

As ours most likely will have to be.

How very, very true. The odds will always be stacked against us if we allow Gay marriage to be decided by a majority vote. I look upon this as a moral issue dealing with an individual's right to the pursuit of happiness, and the right of making a personal choice. Such an issue should not be decided by the majority, which in this case, doesn't give us fair and equal representation.

Let me echo what others have said. The Mormons were not the only religious group who contributed substantial sums in support of Proposition 8. The Knights of Columbus (a fraternal Catholic organization) gave at least $1.4 million. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops gave at least $200,000. Focus on the Family (Christian group) gave nearly $600,000, American Family Association (Christian group) gave $500,000, Family Research Council (mainly Christian group) $64,000, etc.

Yeah, but didn't the owner of Manhunt do the same thing? Hmmm...maybe he just donated to McCain, can't remember. If so, it's not that different though.

Interestingly, two Utah newspapers, UT Tribune, and the UT Press Assoc, both ran articles which stated that the Mormon vote Yes donation has caused a huge rift in their Mormon faith. It seems that several Mormons are supportive of gay civil rights. I hope those members can make a change w/in that faith.

I'm Catholic and I'm pissed at the amount of money that Catholics spent. That was so much cash and we really could've helped communities by putting that money to better use. Imagine the houses we could've built for the homeless, and the soup kitchens we could've stocked. I'm afraid that our Pope and our leaders have forgotten that charity and love is what our faith is built on. My church was also divided. Two of the three priests are pro gay marriage. The Knights of Columbus seems to be against. The Catholic Youth is pro. And on and on it goes. I hope too that our loving, open minded members can make a change as well.

Personally i think the single stupidest things that occurred was that school trip to a lesbian wedding. no on prop 8 was telling people it had nothing to do with schools, but then some moron thought it was smart in the middle of this campaign to send school kids on a field trip to see a lesbian wedding?

It might have been--if it had happened. The Lesbian teacher never mentioned to her class that she was Lesbian, or that she was getting married. They invited some adults, one of whom thought it would be "cute" to bring the kids. (Her kids, not the whole school class.)
