Years ago we used to call it the front room and then later the living room. Long ago they used to call it the parlor. There are also family rooms, and in the last thirty years the great room, especially when open to a large kitchen. In Europe or Australia, I have heard of a lounge or a salon.

I call it the living room. As a kid we called it the "front room." In the basement i have a room I suppose most around here would call it the Great room. I call it my TV room. It is where I have my larger big screen TV, computer and printer stand. It has a couch, recliner, and wood burning stove.

I always try to use whatever term I think will cause the least confusion and/or interruption.
