Yes I am and I've always hated "mate". Most often it's used by complete strangers and it gets my back up every time.
Thanks for elucidating. I guess it's similar to White guys (who've never seen me before in their life) just coming up to me and saying, "Hey, bro," as though they're honorary Black men (I can understand Eminem doing it!), when, as my mother used to say, you don't know him from Adam! And usually, I'm old enough to be their...older uncle.
I prefer my name, unless it's a close friend. I call my close friends "babe" or "honey" or "sweetheart" as a way of letting them know they matter to me. If it's an intellectual discussion, I refer to them by their name.
