Honestly, I fucking hate them! I don't think that artists should have their artistic creations (the talented ones anyway) censored.

If Wal-Mart wants to choose to sell them, Fine. I don't care. But if there is a choice between Amy Winehouse's edited version of her Back to Black album, and the one with the parental advisory sticker on it, I'm going for the latter.

Am I over-exaggerating? I don't think so. I wish that every store had the choice of selling edited AND unedited releases of said CD, etc, etc.

Now it's Your turn. ^_~b

Ew. Hell no.

Not just because I love explicit language, but why alter the intended artistic content of a song?

I think Wal-Mart is guilty of editing cover art too. Bleh.

i'm not a fan. i'd never buy an edited album.

i'm not a big fan of censorship in general though... i hate that they censor songs on the radio. (don't get me started on that rant)

one my friend bought a Lil' John album at Half Price Books and didn't realize it was edited. he was so angry... it was awesome. Lil' John minus profanity = not fun.

Thanks, Jy

now the opening is stuck in my head...

"All you ladies pop your pussy like this..."

There worthless. One time my friend bought a Lil Kim cd that was edited.. I told her but she insisted on getting it.
It was a laugh. haha.

I cant stand edited cds, i am seriously going to suicide bomb Wal-Mart, uggh it pisses me off, jk, Explicit Language is what makes it fun!!!!

They're silly, they're on the way out, but they served a function. A little history lesson for you young 'uns.

The PMRC (you DO know who they are, right? Google!) was coming down fast and furious on the record labels in the 80s. Apparently, there was profanity on records! And violent and sexual themes! Who knew? The PMRC were looking to keep such albums out of reach of the public at large, not just children.

Having two versions of albums was the odd (yet brilliant) compromise reached by the labels. This way, they could release the "offensive" material as is, but have nice, safe, clean versions for the pure folks. PMRC's stated belief was that people liked the music, but were somehow FORCED into accepting the violent/sexual stuff that came with it. The labels sort of forced their hand on it, by offering TWO versions - one clean, one dirty. They basically said, "Let's let the public decide which it wants."

Guess what? We want dirty. Dirty outsold clean about fifteen to one. I don't know of a single clean version that even went gold.

So there IS a reason. And no - it's NOT censorship. It's censorship if it's the only version available. It isn't. If anyone's stupid enough to shop for their music at WalMart, they deserve what they get.

I hate edited music. There was a song out here a few years ago called lovesong... the original goes 'I've just gone and made another fucking love song' but the radio version went 'I've just gone and made another stupid love song'... I only listen to the 'fucking' version.

i understand why they started doing it... it just doesn't make much sense.

and just because there's an uncensored version of something doesn't mean the censored version isn't censored.

Kids tend to strive more for things that they are not allowed to have, so edited music solves nothing, my aunt bought my nine year old cousin an edited version of Chicken And Beer by Ludacris, he made the biggest deal out of it being edited, so he had one of his friends burn him the Naughty version off the net.

Thanks, Jy

I actually loved that song when it was everywhere a few years ago. I think I'm going to go and download it right now...(!)

But I agree that having an edited version of music sucks. I was in Wal-Mart about a year ago and they had a copy of the Scissor Sisters' debut album, which I'd been planning on ordering from Amazon. I figured I could just get it at Wal-Mart and not have to go through the trouble of ordering. Then I noticed there was no Parental Advisory thing on the cover, which the ones on Amazon had, and I remembered my friend had told me Wal Mart only sold edited CDs. I ended up getting it from Amazon.

>>>and just because there's an uncensored version of something doesn't mean the censored version isn't censored.

True enough. But to me, censorship involves making the original version unavailable. Forcing a painter to put clothes on his nude painting is censorship. But then hanging the clothed one in a gallery next to the original naked one is damned silly, but it's not censorship to me. You can always roll your eyes at the clothed one and just look at the original.

i see what you're saying... i just doesn't make any sense to me.

it's still censorship, and to me, seems like a bigger slap in the face. to say "we're going to put this acceptable version of your art along side your unacceptable version."

It may be censorship, but it's the sort of action that says FAR more about the person who is doing the censoring than the person whose art is in question. Were it my music (or art), I'd say, "Well, if you'd like to make a fool of yourself, go right ahead."
