Maybe try the line I put in an earlier post "If I was gay I would fancy you" that way you dont out yourself but let him know you are not homophobic.

I say to accept the invite and see how the conversation goes. When an opportunity comes your way you owe it to yourself to not piss it away. Give it a shot and you never know, he may not be gay, he may be friendly and he may have a very nice friend for you. Take a little leap of faith, scary I know but jump already.

Just act like nothing's different and do the normal kinds of things that friends do with him. Give him a little time to feel comfortable and keep his sexuality out of the spotlight. Then later if you guys become better friends, maybe he will open up more to you.
 
patience, patience. At worst, you have a cool str8 friend. Hard to say for sure, but he doesn't sound completely str8 to me.
