I haven't read through all the responses but what you should do depends on whether the light is flashing or is on constantly. If it's flashing you need to take the car in ASAP! If it's solid it could be something as simple as a gas cap not screwed on completely. Check your manual and it will give you several suggestions of things to check if the light is not flashing.

im a auto tech, if the light comes on and the vehicle is running fine check tire pressures, gas cap, and fluid levels. run the vehicle a few miles go back home disconnect the negative cable of your battery (on some vehicles the battery is now in the trunk or in the wheel well) wait 20 mins....reconnect, and drive off, the light should be off. if the light comes back on you prob have a bad 02 sensor, your EGR valve is stuck (sometimes hitting the EGR housing lightly frees it up) if its a Nissan you're def fucked they have lots of problems with their crankshaft postiion sensors, if it were the coolant sensor your temp gauge or light would tell you something is wrong same with the alternator or battery if the temp gauge is pointing to HOT check to see if you still have a belt going to the water pump or that the relay on the fan(s) are not bad usually turning your A/C on will automatically turn the fan(s) on except on RWD vehicles with a fan clutch which the fan is driven by the engine itself. The check engine light is Emmisions related and is the reason our vehicles today are all fucked up, thank you EPA ....I didnt vote cause I'd fix it myself :)

you know, I had this nice, well-writen response to the above.

But then I realised, someday you may actually realise, umm, you're wrong.

I wait for that day and hope you stay employed at a quick-lube joint.

Mmm...

I could use a 'quick lube joint' at the moment.

Tomorrow is the dreaded day.... I'm taking the car to the mechanic's...

"Dan's Auto Tune" in Sarasota. Call ahead ! Tell them not to screw me !

God, I hate this. I'd rather be having a root canal.

I'll bet ten cents that it is an Oxygen Sensor.

It seems those things are always going bad. :(

I only drive buses.

And usually I ignore it.

Sometimes I call Dispatch, but not usually. With most buses (and cars) it means nothing.

Of course, no matter what ...

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)
Chaz ;)

SO get this....

I'm lucky enough to know an actual honest mechanic here in town...

I drive it into the garage, (It's a Lexus GS 300 '07) It's got just under 30,000 miles on it.

He puts it up on the rack, glances at the odometer and says to me, "Ahh, the old Lexus scam".

Apparently, according to him at least, Lexus' are programmed to have the 'check engine' light come on at 30,000 miles. whether there's anything wrong with the car or not.

This is, of course, to get you back to the dealership and get you good and lubed up for a reaming. ;)

He says the car is fine, he changed the fluids and balanced the tires and sent me on my merry way.

I don't know if I should believe him or not, but I've *never* known a mechanic to turn down work....

My father drove his car with the check engine light on for years.

Never had a problem with the car.

I really think it's just for the dealer to get some money to turn it off.

Glad it all worked out well for you Josh

On these mod-ren cars, somewhere hidden in the innards of the thing, there's a computer type device that checks stuff.

It also remembers what it found wrong for a while.

Auto Zone (and I think the other chains too) will read the code for free for you.

My old clunkers have a way to read them myself without the readout gadget, so then I go to the web and find the codes.

Actually that sounds like a great thing to know!

I vacillate between #1 and #2. I mean, literally, I'm NOT very likely to be masturbating the instant that the CHECK ENGINE light comes on (#4), LOL - it's far more desirable to masturbate when you can give it your undivided attention and not also be trying to pay attention to the road, hehehe.

And of course, if you want to successfully catch fish, it's very important to know how to master bait.

Catching crabs is a whole 'nother story.

Well first of all thanks, I learned a lot about this subject today.
I have been driving for about 10 years, and while I have never seen that light come on in my car I would absolutly take it to the dealer and have what ever the problem is fixed immediately.
What I learned today was that at least it's not something I would have to panic about. I mean ya don't have to pull over and call tow truck, it's ok to drive it home and then to the dealer.
