What exactly does protesting really do?

Speaking of Fred Phelps, a couple years ago I became convinced that he was really all for our rights all this time.

Back during the civil rights era, he was a civil rights lawyer and would voluntarily bail out black people who were jailed during the protests and protect them. He became so frustrated by the inherently racist system that he lost his temper in court one day and they suspended his license.

He went away for a while and when he came back into the public eye he was now the anti-gay image that we know of. I've become convinced that he foresaw the next civil rights movement (for the lgbt community) and decided to take a different approach by shocking people into seeing the true nature of hate.

Remember that all the other christian preachers have been preaching essentially the same message of hate for gay people. They just use more politically correct terms. Fred Phelps simply took out the sugar coat and showed people the hate that resided inside.

Of course, in order for his scheme to work, he needed to make it as genuine as possible. Out of his family, I think his daughter Shirley or whatever the hell her name is is the only person other than himself who know about this. In other words, he sacrificed his family and made them into the most hated family in America to help further our cause.

I have long had a feeling this might be true, and at the same time, cannot imagine it to be true. To keep up such a charade for three decades, one has to be not only good, but also crazy.

It has never occurred to me that it was intentional but it is certainly possible. If it was a scheme..it was a brilliant one.....

I love that he held a mirror up for people to see themselves in....and I thank him for that...

Trust me. You couldn't be more wrong.

Phelps was a horrible man who, along with his family, really believed in their cause against homosexuality. His grandchildren and at least one son can attest to this.

Conspiracy theory, like TB, is here to stay. The internet is the perfect petri dish.

Even if it were true that he was faking it, he got his kids involved in the hatred and being hated. So I really can't offer any sympathy for him since he dragged his whole family into the mess if it was all a charade.

If he purposely sacrificed himself and his kids on purpose to further our cause, I don't think he ever cared if he got sympathy from anyone.

Real heroes do things fully expecting never be recognized. Think of all the unsung heroes of WW2.

Again, it doesn't matter anymore. We may never know. He took whatever intentions and secrets with him to the grave.

No one can fake that much hatred for so long, no matter the intentions or cause. The man was a self-righteous, self-proclaimed prophet of God, and he sucked his entire family into his agenda.

He had no love for us. He had love only from the money he gained in his lawsuits prompted by his hatred. THAT was his only agenda. He just used us to help him reach his goals.

I guess chances are you are right. But what changed him from the civil rights era? How did a guy that turned from a champion of the civil rights movement back in a system that was designed to oppress non Protestant white men to the vile creature of the Westbrook baptist church?

Plenty of things can make a change, I knew a guy in an online game who hated gay people because he had a bad experience with a gay guy who kept persisted with a crush he had on said guy. This guy who hated gays would always give me shit for no reason. He despised me as well.

No. The children and grandchildren who fled from his horrid household, including the beatings and other punishments will attest that this was no act. This was no hero. Just a twisted hateful man.

The difference?

The blacks weren't cocksuckers damned by Leviticus and the stony souled apostle Paul.

People do change, and not always for the better.

More than a few of the brave protesters who stood firm with Dr. Martin Luther King later frittered away their creds through various diversions, distractions and dissipation.

Conversely, there are certainly ex-cons who have gone on to become real heroes against all odds.

And then it is entirely possible that Phelps has always held a deep dichotomy in his soul, advocating for equal rights for minorities while viewing gays as subhuman. If so, it would be with much precedent, as suffragettes certainly did a similar thing in championing women's rights while some would never have endorsed the vote for Chinese or African Americans.

Well being black doesn't really stop you being a mad Christian does it. Even as the Westboro Baptist Church they kept up a anti-racism position - although that only went as far as you keeping in line with the rest of their stupid moral positions.

Idiots out west cause a problem with Mall of America and then they went to the airport to block traffic. Again, idiots who are probably on welfare and have nothing better to do with the time and energy.

IIRC from court records I read years back, one of the methods of "discipline" he advocated for boys was a swift, hard backhand to the testicles.

Phelps wasn't doing his shtick to help LGBTs. And the SPLC agrees with me on that.

Years ago I was at a friend's house. He went to Phelps' website and was poking around. He found a list of Fred's sermons. He decided to play one. Well, his mom was there and she's Christian. The sermon starts. It sounded like Fred was shitfaced and not wearing dentures. Friend's mom is saying "that's not the way it is". Between Fred's drunken rambling and the look on her face, I about pissed my pants from laughing so hard.

@piano1, so if they're protesters with BLM they're on welfare and to lazy to work? I need hip-waders because the shit is getting deep.
