I live in Venice, which is part of Los Angeles, and I guess the most famous group from here was The Doors. There was a mural of Jim Morrison on the boardwalk until a few years ago.

Other local (L.A.) groups that I like include Oingo Boingo and Überzone. I'm sure there are others - I just don't know that they are local.

I like a lot of groups from Düsseldorf as well as UK and San Francisco, where I used to live. I tend to prefer European music over American, although there are California groups I like.

There's a little town about 30 minutes south of Tulsa, called Okemah and Carrie Underwood is from there/here. She even sings a song on her "Some Hearts" CD about comin' into Tulsa on the weekends and partying. I LOVE country music but not Underwood's overly produced, formulaic brand. And the biggest-selling country act of all-time, Garth Brooks -- I'm not sure if he is from Tulsa, but he lives here. I saw him and wife Trisha Yearwood at an Old Navy about five years ago.

Amber Valleta, Hanson and Vince Gill are also from Tulsa. Them, I can appreciate.

So thats not bad.... it's quality and not quantity... minus a few. Well, it's good enough for a small town.

I found this article on California music, and got some info on L.A. bands that I left out. Most importantly, there is Jane's Addiction, which is from Venice and one of my favorite bands. Going back to the surf period you have

The Beach Boys
Jan & Dean
Chantays
Surfaris
Dick Dale

and then later:

The Byrds
Buffalo Springfield
Frank Zappa
The Eagles
Poco
Jackson Brown
Sly & the Family Stone
Motley Crüe
X
Black Flag
Circle Jerks
Red Hot Chili Peppers

More recently there have been a lot of hip hop groups from south central L.A., but I haven't followed any of those.

Danno - you omitted the Philadelphia Phunk sound, started by George Clinton. That's what I mainly associate with Philly.

Jillian Barberie

Jillian (who now uses the last name Reynolds) just had a baby last Friday, a girl named Ruby. Jillian is our local weather girl on Good Day L.A., the Fox morning news show that I watch. I love her!! Years ago, I sent GDLA a fax one morning, and they read it on the air and they all said "Thanks" to me personally.

I thought Mickey Mouse was from L.A. (created in Hollywood), and I thought Britney Spears was from Louisiana.

And the 70s Philly sound - MFSB, Three Degrees, McFadden & Whitehead. Plus it was the home of American Bandstand.

Garth Brooks was born in Yukon, Oklahoma. He also has a home in Owasso, Oklahoma -where his daughters attended public school before he remarried. He was quite the celebrity when he attended parent events... very polite and friendly.

Rue Machallahen (Blanche from Golden Girls) and Heather Langenkamp (Nancy from teh Nightmare on Elm Street movies) are also from Tulsa.

The All American Rejects started out as a garage band in Stillwater, where they attended Oklahoma State University. Did I mention Garth Brooks also attended OSU, where he lived at 1106 Kerr Hall and was on the track/field team?
