What happened to Mya?

I Love "Free" and 'Fear of Flying" is one of my favourite albums.

She's a good singer and she's been in a few movies:

Chicago
Cursed (with Christina Ricci)

It seems like when Aaliyah died R&B went with her...today it's mostly cookie cutter Pop with a new act every week (mostly one hit wonders)

People are "dropping" albums every year instead of like the 90's when it would take years for a new album to come out.

here's her "new" song Lock-U down

I'll admit that I didn't fall head over heels with Mya when she first came on the scene. I did enjoy many of her singles though. But something happened after the release of Fear and Flying and Moodring. I was hooked. I developed an even greater appreciation and respect for her talent after seeing her in Chicago.

I think one of the reasons why I like Mya is because she isn't like any of her peers. She has her own style. She does her own thing. And like any entertainer, sometimes it catches on and sometimes it doesn't. But in an era where mainstream R&B music has turned into cookie-cutter pop music and the only female mainstream R&B singers who are getting play are Beyoncé and Rihanna, it seems a little harder for female R&B singers to stake their claim. She like many of her peers (Amerie, Kelis, and Kelly Rowland to name a few) have dealt with the constant release date changes for whatever reason. Hopefully, the new release will see the light of day. If Paris Hilton can release a record, there should be no problem releasing Mya's.

I never liked Mya. I much preferred her contemporaries: Aaliyah, Brandy, and Monica.

Mya just seemed so "bootleg" by comparison.

I wouldn't go so far as to call her "bootleg." She has great talent, in my opinion. But I will admit, Aaliyah, Brandy, and Monica are pretty tough acts to follow. You know, I think I'll start a thread on Aaliyah.

Mya's new video "Ridin'" was just released. You can see it at kevipodmusic.blogspot.com.
