hard to say cause as kevbo said the entire course of lgbt history (and hence all of human history) would be totally different...

although i suppose we could talk about what if tomorrow every gay guy's hands suddenly turned red. i have to think there'd suddenly be a lot less homophobes since most of them are probably closeted gays anyway :P

I have often wondered the "what if" question concerning homosexuality. What if we had some physical identifier? Would it be more or less difficult for us as a minority? Would we have had a liberation movement tied into the liberation of blacks in the 1950s-1970s?

There are other questions that come along with it as well. I sometimes see people of ethnic background on television state that gays can hide and never have to go through the ordeals they do and have. They can not hide their identity. But does that really make it easier for us or is it worse to have to hide who you really are?

They'd probably just come up with something like its the mark of the devil, that people with red hands are the servants of satan. At one point in time parents of a child with red hands would have been accused of worshipping satan, possibly the mother being accussed of havign sex with satan, and they'd have all be burnt at the stake.

If it showed up at birth then your parents would already know and either except it, ignore it and bleach there childs hand to hide the fact and hope they'll turn out straight (though how fucked up would that kid be? Going through there life thinking they're straight because they don't have red hands, but then at the age of 13 the feelings start ...), put the child up for adoption or possibly even kill the child (in countries where its illegal to be gay babies born with red hands might have to be killed by law).

Though the course of gay rights might just follow a similiar path to racial rights. Who knows, but its a very fascinating question.
 
And as a matter of random fact, I DO have red hands. Well, I've got a port wine birthmark that covers two fingers of my left hand. I guess you were right all along, Lube - people CAN tell I'm gay at a glance. Sorry for doubting you. :)

It's a hypothetical; it's meant to encourage intelligent discussion.

What if being gay is not an on/off switch? What if you had very light pink hands if you were mostly straight and dark red hands if mostly gay? Would your answer be different? Would society treat sexual minorities differently?

What are your thoughts?
 
Nothing by now we would have full rights as we would have fought back. Closte cases would wear gloves like M. Jackson.
So everyone would know.

Many would have died years ago until we all had the nerve to close down all religous institutions. And Fought back.

I am reminded of the chant "They say Get back I say Fight back"

Would the coming out process be different if we had red hands? Would there be a coming out process? How would parents explain it to young children? Would sex still be such a taboo subject? Would there be red colonies, like leper colonies? Red bars? Would you search for a boyfriend with a particular shade of red hands? Would you feel more comfortable talking to a coworker or schoolmate with red hands? Would there be red hand clubs in elementary or high school or college? A white hand-red hand alliance? how would religion deal with red handed people?

Would red handed people marry white handed people? Would we die out because we wouldn't reproduce? Would theatre, the arts, or anything else suffer?

Interesting points! Would we fight back because we couldn't hide? How is that different from the real world?
 
Might some societies perform infanticide on red handed children when they were born? Might other societies see a red handed child as a good omen, as he could provide more resources to his extended family because he had more disposable income? Might red handedness be viewed as nothing more than left handedness? Might marriage and procreation be separated from sex as entertainment? Might red handed men have a wife and procreate and raise children together, but then be perfectly acceptable to have sex on the side (both husband and wife?) Might red handed men be banned from having sex with women, or marrying them?

Might red handed boys be seen as a liability when choosing sports teams? Might red handed boys have separate teams or leagues? Might red handed boys be better at certain positions on a team? Might we discover that red handed boys, overall, are better at sports because the masculine ones will all be outed?

Might there be discrimination among red handed men about who has the purest red hands, or who has less red in their hands?

Will red handedness be the new black? ;)

Note: I'm not arguing for or against any of these things (obviously many conflict with each other). Just dreaming up possibilities.
