What is affluent to you?

When my friend and I pull in to the Sunoco in his 1999 Honda Civic and we are pooling our funds together so we can buy 5 gallons of fuel at $3.53 a gal and some asshole pulls to the next pump in his 75 K 2014 Range Rover ranting loudly about the cost of fuel and how ridiculous it is but drops 25 gallons in the tank even spilling some as he tops of the tank and drives away, still in his rant yelling to himself at the cost.

Affluent is an ambiguous term that means at least upper middle class and may include rich, but I usually limit it to upper middle class. To me affluent/upper middle class means that you can afford all that you need and some of what you want, some luxuries. You would have a better than average house and two good cars (maybe two $35,000 cars at today's U.S. prices) and be able to take a modest vacation each year and not have trouble paying your bills and be able to afford two or three of the following luxuries:
1. help at your house with your chores one day a week
2. one luxury car ($50,000) instead of a $35,000 car
3. a small boat less than 30 feet long
4. a luxury vacation every five years or maybe every three years
5. maybe a small vacation home
6. maybe an expensive piece of jewelry or some clothing or art work, but probably only one
7. maybe a swimming pool or access to a club swimming pool
8. maybe a somewhat expensive hobby
Rich would be more than this. It would include:
1. perhaps two or more residences
2. no trouble paying your bills and probably not thinking about the price
3. at least 40 hour a week help at home instead of one day a week
4. luxury vacations and trips frequently including being able to travel to another continent several times a year
5. $150,000 in cars, either one at that price or three $50,000 cars
5. a boat of 65 feet in length or bigger
6. maybe having access to a jet plane for your personal use, even if it is a company plane
I'll probably think of more later.

The word affluence is ultimately Latin for flow, while wealth is an Old German word for well-being. It still appears in the German language as Wohl, meaning well, and wohlstand meaning prosperity. Corny could probably weigh a bit more into this point. Eventually, the word flow came to mean supply of money and well-being transformed into rich. They appear today to be semantically identical words.

Wealth can have several meanings in German, but the picture that you are trying to paint probably is "rich" (reich) vs "wealthy" (wohlhabend). Usually (depends on the usage!) rich would only mean that you have a lot of money. Wealthy can also mean that you have the "important things in life", like a steady, bigger income, health, nice family, a house etc.

Funny thing .. affluent .. fluent flow .. is close to the German word "flüssig" (liquid). Which is colloquial for having money to spend it.
