What is new on the Gay Marriage front?

The Hawaii Supreme Court has tossed a lawsuit trying to gut marriage equality there.

We got Guam!!! Finally one of our rulings was handed down from the bench:

It appears Mexico will beat the United States to a nationwide ruling for same-sex marriage (although the full implementation will likely happen after we get it):

Several counties with large cities are already making plans to begin issuing licenses the moment the Supreme Court hands down the ruling (note that these are not in the 6th Circuit and thus are not directly bound):

Baxter County (San Antonio) has made a similar declaration, although I can't find a news source.

Well this is it. We have the power to FORCE married str8 people to get divorced. I thought the str8 people in Texas were strange. But this takes the classical cake. Anyone from Down Under have a story about this?"

Couple Forced to Divorce Because Gays Are Ruining Their Marriage
6/10/15 1:30pm

Well, the rumors are true: Gay marriage will ruin the sanctity of straight marriage. Need proof? Meet an Australian couple who are threatening to divorce if gays get the right to marry. Nick and Sarah Jensen believe that once those heathen gays can vow everlasting love to each other (and get equal rights), their own marriage becomes null, void and useless in the eyes of God—and thus, their own selves.

That has got to be in the running for "Most Foolish Decision Ever".

Forced??? THEY came up with this decision, all by themselves. I don't think an edict came from Parliament in Canberra or Sydney decreeing that they must get divorced.

If gay marriages ruined and nullified str8 marriages, THE CHURCH would be demanding divorces, right?

You can't fix stooooooopid.

Dallas County is ready to go the moment the Supreme Court rules in our favor:

http://www.towleroad.com/2015/06/da...ees-if-scotus-rules-for-same-sex-marriag.html

A judge in Arkansas has ruled that the state must recognize the roughly 500 marriages conduced in the state from the 9th to the 15th of May last year:

http://www.towleroad.com/2015/06/ar...0-same-sex-marriages-performed-last-year.html

Michigan had a similar ruling a few months ago regarding the window marriages in their state.

And the sky hasn't fallen, no earthquakes or plagues . . . .

Expect resistance after the decision date, however, it should not last long when those entities start eyeballing the legal bills.

I hope you are right. The Evildoers are still pounding on Roe v. Wade - passed in1973. They won't quit.

I think that they see they will lose the marriage challenges so they have now turned to a new scam: allow magistrates and other government officials from performing marriages or "the opt out clause." North Carolina's legislature overrode a governor today (possibly illegally without the proper notice and waiting until they had a smaller quorum) and passed a bill that allows just that. Expect other states to quickly follow because this appears their new tactic.

I can hardly wait until an atheist magistrate refuses to marry Christians; or a Catholic Magistrate refuses to officiate at a wedding for divorced individuals; or when a Southern Baptist refuses to officiate over a Muslim, Jewish, or Catholic ceremony. Magistrates represent the government (people) and are to perform their duties irrespective of race, religion, sexual identity, or other reasons. If they want to be a Rabbi, priest, or minister, quit and get the certificate and then they can pick and choose whoever they want.

We're seeing that with what happened today in NC and MI.

(This is where I meant to post this, instead of in the immigration thread.)

WHAT IN THE FUCK HAS HAPPENED TO MY HOME STATE? (And thewiz's home state, too)

Repugs are turning that entire land mass (well, multiple land masses, large and small) into a complete shithole. I want to retire there, but it may simply be out of the question.

They tried last year to pass a bill that would allow business and government to refuse services OF ANY KIND (yes, even emergency care, etc.) basing decisions on religious objections. THAT IS DANGEROUS. That can kill people.

THANKFULLY IT DIDN'T HAPPEN.

Will any of these people EVER be asked to actually PROVE that their religion determines their decision? No, probably not. They can just lie and say their religion demands it, and just wait, I'm sure that even atheists will start using religion as a bludgeon before this is all over.

Sadly, the Republicans have gerrymandered the districts in such a way that they are able to keep their majority in the House and Senate in Michigan; Snyder has not been a centrist by any means and has run further and further right.

Between the damage they have done to LGBT, they have also dismantled unions, taxed pensions to pay for a huge tax cut for businesses (that every study has shown did nothing except enrich the millionaires at the expense of retirees, middle class, and lower income folks), and continue to cut education. We used to joke about the deep south; Michigan has tried to race them to the bottom.

He still needs to cut funding for the University of Michigan.

As a Spartan, I should probably support that cut but they seem to share the pain whenever education reductions take place.

I really don't like comparisons between this issue and abortion. The two debates are really nothing alike. Marriage is a black and white issue; the other is gray, giving plenty of room to fight over nuances and details. That being said, the abortion debate has cost those states and organizations hundreds of millions of dollars.

It's a shame that the fight we actually see is less about nuance and detail, but pretty much crass pandering to a conservative base hell-bent on subjugating other people's fertility to their own particular theology. Because I agree that the nuances are actually there with abortion.

Anyway.

Okay so when is the date?

Do they just release a decision? Or do they give a week's notice or something...

They have already scheduled an additional day for decisions to be handed down (Thursday, June 18) and could possibly schedule more considering there are 20 cases from this term with decisions still pending. We will probably get at least 24-48 hours notice so people can gather to celebrate/protest (which I believe was the case before Windsor was handed down).

http://www.supremecourt.gov/

The decision in Mexico has been officially released:

http://abcnews.go.com/International...t-opens-door-gay-marriage-nationwide-31733845

Already the nation's largest state is following suit:

http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/...a-officially-approves-same-sex-marriage120615

Now that judges are bound by the Supreme Court and must rule in favor of same-sex couples wishing to marry, expect the rest to fall like dominos very quickly.

Okay, so it's June 21st and nothing yet.

It is the long history of this court that it has dragged out every decision on gay marriage to the last minute possible; and it has repeatedly found ways to make its "rulings" on gay marriage not actually say what so obviously needs to be said.

I'm pretty fed up with this bunch.
