  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What is the best way to get a fresh smelling house?

Ugh, yes! A dirty cat box smells worse! I make sure my laundry house only uses all natural, non-scented, stuff. None of the laundry soap has phosphates or chlorine bleach. It's an all natural, vegetable based soap. They're awesome, and they don't use nasty chemicals for the dry cleaning either. The use a scentless O3 system. Nothing smells worse than fake frangerances trying to cover a nasty smell. It's like, oh joy, now it smells like dirty feet and roses! Blech!

Now if only MR3 could impart such wisdom on removing semen stains...|

Quoted for excellence.

Thynight, I've tried it Travis's way. If you fill the slow cooker all the way up to the top, and put the slow cooker on low, and add the spices, it'll last all day.

Wait a minute! I have a cite for you:

(Follow instructions, but use a slow cooker instead.)

I will give it a try.

Thanks.

Thynight, odor and humidity are often related. Some areas of the country are simply more prone to the effects of residual moisture from the environment. I suggest you consider using a dehumidifier. Some models generate undesirable noise, so you might also add a timer to ensure that it runs when you are normally away from home.

LMAO I had stop using febreeze in my apt because my pets were getting high off it.

I use a combo of scented candles (yankee candle buttercream scent in the bathroom is amazing) and scented oils; the ones with the sticks.

WOW!!! I would have never thought!

Thanks Travis and Johann. I have did it a few times already and it seems to work well.

Also thanks Opinterph. I think you are right and a dehumidifier could help a lot with the issue.

If you are not allergic to fabric softeners, pour a few tablespoons of it into an empty Febreze bottle and fill it with water. Spray it as you would Febreze. It works as well and is a helluva lot cheaper.

I probably would be allergic to it. I'll tell my mother though. She likes using Febreze so that could save her some money.

Thynight, the funny thing is that I was getting ready to post a correction.

I ran this thread by my OH. He says that the slow cooker approach worked better with just plain baking soda in the water, which absorbed the odors.

He says the stovetop method worked better, when I put specific spices in it. He remembers, in particular, that I used the Apples and Cinnamon recipe quite a lot. It made the whole house smell like freshly baked Apple Pie.

I'd forgotten the specific details, because it's been quite a while ago.

I apologize if my original post was misleading.

I will try it that way too, but it worked really well for me. I found I can even shut it off and turn it back on a few days later and it still works really well. The only problem I had with it is it takes about five hours for the scent to start filling my place.

But watch your electric power bill. Dehumidifiers suck up water and power.

I will keep that in mind. It will be a while though before I can even get one. I priced them around here and they are quite a bit.

It depends on fabric type, dontcha know? :p

A friend of mine shared this successful tip for removing semen stains and lube "spills" from your sheets and bedding:

Before you take the sheets off the bed, pretreat them with dish detergent (Dawn works amazingly). Semen is largely proteins and the lube likely has oils which dish detergent loves. After getting the stains all coated in dish detergent, remove and launder as normal. I was amazed the first time when everything came out....
