What is the best way to pay for college?

i worked full time while going to junior college full time, and saved like crazy. then i went to a four year university, and ended up using only some of the money i saved for rent the first year because the state paid for all of my college tuition while i was there. in my second year i got a major science scholarship that paid for tuition, books, rent, food, earmarks for new laptop ($2000 max), and some money for my lab. (this was one of only 4 awarded in the entire university of some 30,000 or more students that year). i was lucky to graduate debt free.

so if you ask me the best way to pay for college, try the financial aid route, and then when you are there, apply for scholarships and make yourself stand out from the rest. i had never applied for scholarships before, and i had thought competition was so fierce that it was not worth the effort, and so i decided i should at least try just one.....and what do you know!!!! i already explained it above.

The key to paying for graduate school is applying for a fellowship. ;) They pay for everything tuition, room, and board while you get experience in your career field.

I also go to work, I make only about 600 a month though, but I'm part-time and though the job sucks, I make more money and since I stayed in state, i got a lot of scholarships from private organizations.

If you are doing a chartered accountancy degree like me, its easy to get funding from many of the big firms in accountancy. They give you merit Bursaries if u pass thats worth quite a bit. I have 1 merit Bursary with them for R11000 south african rands a year which basically covers half my university fees. If you are good enough to get a full scholarship with them, they paid for everything. They also look more at your personality and not your marks when handing out scholarships. So if u are in this field, you are in luck.

I had scholarships which helped pay some; but I also worked part time as a waiter in a nice restaurant where I earned excellent money in tips and still had a paycheck every two weeks. I feel that being a waiter through school is the best because you work 20-30 hours a week and make very good money once you learn some tricks. You can spend your tip money in clothes, colognes or whatever but save all your paychecks in a savings account and you will have quite a bit of money to pay for a quarter or two per year. Good luck.
