Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

This video is frightful and saddening, but the music.... oh, the music. I have never heard so much emotion packed into an orchestration.

I hope you guys can enjoy this one.

Wow, appalled to see Ger hasn't posted here.

You're asking for a specific piece? I can't; every composer I like has their own elegance which makes them incomparable. Nevertheless, I tend to bend over the side of melodic works containing dissonance, which was a trend in early 20th Century period. Anyway...

Four pieces I like the most:

1. Le Sacre du Printemps - Igor Stravinsky

The tribal rhythm and tones are clearly exploited here to bring out the spring ritual of the Pagans. The other plus point here is the unusual melodies sought from many cultural ancient songs, heavily embellished with dissonant lines, giving out an eerie yet superb feeling; brutal and graceful at the same time. I really want to see a live ballet performance of it^^

2. Gaspard de La Nuit - I. Ondine - Maurice Ravel

Fluidity is the key of this picturesque movement, on which Ravel adapted perfectly from the original poem set by Aloysius Bertrand. The rapid semi-tremolo notes and chromatic terts on high notes resembles the water ripples, while the up and down swinging melody lines formed by transcendental chord forms accompanied by the interchanging key signatures denotes the fluid nature of the demonic work. Unlike its preceeding work, Jeux d'eau, the work implies a mysterious Ondine rather than the perfect pitch of water.

3. The Planets Suite: Saturn - Gustav Holst

The concept of time ticking slow yet unstoppable and quite frightful---implied by the ostinatos---dominates this superb underrated piece. The later part---unison of ostinatos resembling clocks, gears, and bells---counteracts the first half, concluding time as neither good nor evil. Holst noted this was his favourite work.

4. Nocturnes L. 91 - I. Nuages - Claude Achilles Debussy

I consider this to be the only orchestral work of Debussy which was able to signify a new atmosphere, as the others counterfeit each other too much. The non-prominent tones due to no specific scales used gives out a levitating feeling similar as contemplating clouds with various colours, shapes, and texture. The characteristics of Debussy was shown with its melodic chord lines and unpredicted scale change.

5. Totentanz S 192 - Franz Liszt

The only thing I like from his: his fascination towards death, giving birth to dark unique movements.

I don't even know where to start, Dvorak, Beethoven, but I have to go with Beethoven's Seventh Symphony conducted by Herber Von Karajan, parts of it are heaven on earth.

Classical noob butting in here. :-)

A common, popular choice, but I like it.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

St. Paul's Suite Intermezzo is always going to be my top pick, but lately I've been really into Adagio for Strings.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

The intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana (Pietro Mascagni).

Come again?
Dead thread or dead composers?

Both

Along with a funeral march.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I don't and can't have one favorite. Love Mozart, and Beethoven. But, here's one:

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Can't pick just one (of course), but any list I make would include Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I have far too many, my list could go on and on! As generic as it may sound, Bach is really one of my favorites. I even have a Bach action figure!

But here's an example of some of Bach's acrobatic vocal writing from the Magnificat (a plus if you can read music):

But I like modern, too. Here's a quick excerpt of another favorite from Prokofiev:

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I always find myself levitating back to Bach's St. Matthew's Passion BWV 244 No.68. I have no clue what the last part of that stands for, but I still enjoy it.

Outside of that, anything from Mozart's Requiem tends to work wonders as well.

And while it's not 'completely classical', I do enjoy some of the 'fusion' music that's been created; such as E.S. Posthumus' 'Pompeii':

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Pachelbel's Canon in D Major & Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

My one of my favorite pieces without words:

If your question includes opera there are way to many. For Classical music it's what I mostly listen too.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I have lots of a favorites. The "An die Freude" from Beethoven's 9th has always been one of my top favorites:

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I tend to prefer opera, but this piece will always have a special place in my heart

It was my introduction to classical music, in a way that child could understand

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

According to iTunes, it's a toss up between:

* Takaoki Sugitani's Mazurka VI
* Giacinto Scelsi's Uaxuctum: The Legend of the Mayan City Which They Themselves Destroyed for Religious Reasons - Third Movement
* George Frederic Handel's Water Music - Suite 1 in F - Hornpipe

...as those are the three I've played the most.
