What is your favorite piece of Classical music? [MERGED]

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

as far as a single piece, i cant really name one. but a couple of my favorite composers are Bach and Gustav Holst. being a music education major, i get a lot of exposure to a large variety of music that i can expand upon though :D

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Chopin's Waltz in C-Sharp minor, particularly the way it was interpreted by Rachmaninoff.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

1812 Overture and Ode to Joy.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Buxtehude's "Tocata in F", I hope the organist is skilled enough to play it and play it well for I have requested it as a prelude for my funeral one day, and I hope not soon. So there appears to be plenty of time to practice.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

There was a long thread on this about a year and a half ago.
Try a search maybe.
Like there can only be one thread ever about any topic  .

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Mozart's Requiem.

Handel's Messiah

Barber's Adagio. (which I'm seeing tonight)

Bach's Cello concerto opening movement.

Saint Saens' Carnival of the Animals.

And about a hundred other pieces.

But these are the ones I want to hear when I am breathing my last.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Lots of nice pieces here! I couldn't really name just one; there are too many masterpieces. But since you asked, any list of mine would include Bach's Goldberg Variations (on a harpsichord; I think they sound muddy on a modern piano). Closely followed by the great Passacaglia in c minor for organ.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Highland Cathedral done with pipes and pipe organ.

Toccata by Widor too.

I'd be perfectly happy if Pachelbel had been struck by a falling tree before he wrote Canon in D...... :grrr:

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I don't know if it's considered "classical" but I really like "Satiric Dances (for a Comedy by Aristophanes)" by Norman Dello Joio.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I don't and can't have one favorite. Love Mozart, and Beethoven. But, here's one:

Yay! for this one. I am doing this for my jury this semester. Love it! I'm also wanting to do the nocturne in Db.

Great Choice!

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Pachelbel's Canon is one of my favourites. I'll also quite happily have a run at Fortuna by Orff and Jupiter from The Planets by Holst.

And the rapid brilliance of Toccata and Fugue by Bach - I saw a show in Cape Town some years ago, Roll Over Beethoven, where they get a rock band to cover all these classical pieces and the show opened with this done on an electric violin with some screaming guitars in the background. It was incredible.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I don't know that I have a favorite but some that come to mind -

Beethoven's Oratorio "Christ on the Mount of Olives"
Bach- B-minor mass
Arthur Honegger - Une Cantate de Noel (Christmas Cantata)
Gabriel Faure - Requiem
Barber - Adagio for Strings
Beethoven - Eroica Symphony (3rd)
Mozart - Piano Concerto #21
Tchiakovsky - Romeo & Juliet Overture
Mendelssohn - Hebrides Overture
Richard Strauss - Also Sprach Zarathustra
Mahler - 2nd and 7th Symphonies

I'll quit now....

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Glad you liked it! (;
As for opera... I am a HUGE opera lover! My most favourite are Angela Gheorghiu and Edita Gruberova. I am not going to post arias everybody knows well. Instead here is (perhaps) not so famous piece that shows Edita's artistry at its best. She is just beyond words. I mean, things she is capable of with her voice... BRAVA! :=D

Sorry for tudou link, but unfortunately, it has been removed from youtube ):

Gruberova I know of course. "Nightingale." I can't believe I never heard of this lied? song? Who is it by? She is astonishing but then I'm a canary lover.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I like Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus.

I've enjoyed doing The Messiah in choral groups as well.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Perhaps the "Purists" will think this too "Modern" to be considered "Classical". But, I think, it's one of the Greatest Compositions of "Our Time"!! ... ..|

As a "Preacher's Kid", I can't tell you how many times I've sung the "Hallejuah Chorus"!

There's even a recording of one of our church choirs, including a solo, by Me, "somewhere"! #-o
