What is your favorite piece of Classical music? [MERGED]

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Just curious- what else are you doing for Juries??? I'm working a couple of the etudes, op. 10 no. 8 and op. 25 no. 5... Not nearly as fun as the Nocturnes. I'm jealous.

oh yay, good for you! You'll have fun with those! I am also doing Mozarts 12 variations and a Chopin Waltz in A Minor... so much fun! Good luck!

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Everything by Ravel, especially:
Miroirs, Gaspard De La Nuit

Karol Szymanowski

Johann N. Hummel all Piano Concertos

Sergei Bortkiewicz

and

Dmitri Shostakovich

and

Enrique Granados

and

Lowell Liebermann, the new music gimmick, let's say Gargoyles :)

and of course the obvious Rach, Liszt, Deb.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I can't name one or two or ten.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Vivaldi.

I'm particularly partial to Gloria, for the simple reason that in the past, I've performed it several times with several groups (singing). I had the experience of singing the first movement in a mass choir many years ago with over 2000 others.

4 seasons is pretty cool too. Somewhere I've got a version played by The Canadian Brass that is really neat.

Edit: It has been brought to my attention that I fucked up.

Vivaldi was mentioned.

Sue me. :p

It won't be the first time this week.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Another note, but not entirely classical:

Anyone a fan of Wendy/Walter Carlos and his/her early synthesizer versions of Bach? I was a huge fan back in the day.

I also don't remember if he/she was Wendy or Walter first.

She was Walter first. Now she's Wendy.

She prefers that all her music be referred to as "by Wendy Carlos." She used to have a stamp that said that, and would stamp old albums with it when you got them autographed.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I like that kind of thing.

Any links?

I couldn't find much free Wendy Carlos online. Here's some from A Clockwork Orange, taken from Purcell's Funeral Music for Queen Mary:

At 1:10, you can hear the Dies Irae (taken from the Latin mass hymn, I think). Which can also be found in Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, as well as another Carlos composition:

Here's the original Purcell. It's definitely worth a listen:

And Berlioz reworking the Dies Irae:

For opera, I like Puccini's Madama Butterfly, most specially Callas' performance

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

How interesting...I was just about to post a thread asking this very same question. Many people make fun of my love for classical music. But screw them. Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg is one of my personal favorites. I like Apocalyptica's version of the song as well as the techno remix. I also like all nine of Beethoven's symphonies as well as his Fur Elise and Moonlight Sonata. Ludwig Von Beethoven is a true genius...to be able to continue to compose after he'd gone deaf...such a shame he couldn't hear his works played. Bach and of course Mozart's work are also pleasing to my ears. I also found Greensleeves to be quite soothing. I loved Canon in D Major and Flight of the Bumblebee. Man there are too many songs to choose from between Edvard Grieg, Ludwig Von Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mozart, Handel, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Verdi...the list goes on....so yeah I'm kinda a classical music lover...and I'm ok with that. Much better to listen to than a lot of the nonsense played today that's for sure.

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Um, I also play Bohemian Rhapsody every year on the piano at Thanksgiving, and my whole family sings it. !oops! Lyrics printed out also, just in case anyone forgot them.

Sweet! I can't believe I forgot the Bohemian Rhapsody! Thanks ..|

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I also like all nine of Beethoven's symphonies as well as his Fur Elise

"There's a little boy across the street
Who plays this same
Tune every day;
He plays until the gets up to this spot
And then he stops."

and Moonlight Sonata.

"Do you know something Schroeder?
I think the way you play the pia-a-a-a-a-no
Is nice.
Do you know something else?
It's always been my dream
That I'd marry
A man who plays the piano."

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

Clair de Lune

I also love La Source (on Harp).

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

I don't know if it has been mentioned in this thread, but the Polonaise, op. 53, in A flat major "Heroic", by Frederic Chopin is quite amazing, especially played by V. Horowitz:

This video is frightful and saddening, but the music.... oh, the music. I have never heard so much emotion packed into an orchestration.

I hope you guys can enjoy this one.
that was absolutely breathtaking

Re: What is your favorite piece of Classical music?

The movie is gut wrenching, and the music did it justice.

Born in 1599 and died in 1658
(September)...

(I hope someone gets it!)
