  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What is your impression of immigrants?

Well my mother's family were immigrants from Holland and my great, great grandmother and her children emigrated from England.

I have no issue with immigrants from any country as long as they value the principles of freedom, and socialist democracy that have made Canada as good a place as any to live.

I think that in Canada we tend to largely celebrate our country as a community of communities and not insist on a heterogenous, heterosexual melting pot where everyone has to conform to colonial mores.

Technically I'm an immigrant.

Wait. Does it count if you emigrated from a country where people do not just squat down to go to the toilet? It's a Telly thread, so it will eventually get down to toilets.

I wasn't including Canadians as immigrants, plus you can just drive here and all. :p

All of my immediate neighbours in my block of flats are refugees/immigrants from Somalia. In fact I am the only non-Somali currently living at my end of the block. Strangely enough my first impression of my neighbours was/is that they are people ... much the same as all the other people I have encountered during the course of my life. Whatever ... I sure hope they have a better life here than they did in Somalia.

I'm prejudiced when it comes to Somalians. Every time I see the in the media, they seem to be more attractive than the rest of us. Whatever their genetic mix is, it's danged appealing.

Never noticed them to be any more attractive than any of you other puny humans......

I mean... I was born in Hartford Connecticut, so it's not like I'm not American, but I grew up and lived almost my whole life in Canada and I'm a Canadian Citizen and have always felt Canadian. I don't feel American, really... but I do vote in elections and sponsored my husband for his Green Card.

But yes... Canadians are immigrants, we're just... you know... on average better-educated, in better health, speak two languages and have less racial bias.

Yeah, I guess. And who am I to judge anyone fleeing Tim Horton's or poutine? Different strokes.

What is your general impression of immigrants?
What is your first impression if you just know someone as acquaintance and he/she is immigrant?

Sorry, JPGhost but why would you want to stir this hornet nest of negativity. Please no offense intended. God, please, no thread on abortion.

Everyone has been positive though! We like immigrants on here (except one member being with B)

Not bothered by them. If they treat me with respect, I'll do the same. Treat me like a POS, they'll get it back in spades. Been there, done that. The apartment complex I live in has Muslims. I guess I should just go xenophobic, scream and move.

I was more fleeing the lack of jobs in the porn industry that I wanted. I had reached about as high as I would or could ever go in Toronto and I'd been offered a job working for Fratmen. Easy decision.

It's heart warming that so many are open to people from other lands, I always was. But I gave up the good guy act on this one.

Listening to some one who fled a communist nation say "Americans are stupid" and "Obama ruined my life" was too much, just too fucking much.
I had this asshole fuck me over for the last 4 years that I worked, one day he asked if I wanted to go fishing with him (he had bought a boat) I asked if he planed on pushing me over board, he replied "at work, we fight for job, after work we be friends", I told him to fuck off.
I don't hate immigrants, but like all other people, let them prove themselves first, I've been fucked (unwillingly) too many times.

It depends on their general disposition.

If they are kind and accepting... I have no issues. If they are assholes and have brought whatever bullshit ideology they were trying to get away from their own country... I'm like. Fuck off!

Generally, I am interested but then the above applies.

I find foreigners more interesting than natives. I use to be curious about their story and experiences.

Love them, they bring so much diversity to a country.

We're decades ahead of you in this respect and I can assure you, it won't be much fun when all your cities are stripped of almost all their original working and middle class citizens. It's not interesting to have cities full of people who can't speak their own language and have no loyalty towards their own nation.

The mood has soured so much in The Netherlands that many of the children of people who emigrated here in the seventies and eighties have decided to move back to Turkey and Morocco.

Many times they're escaping a hellhole and creating a new life in a country where they have the opportunity to do so, which is nice. The only time when I really have a problem is when people such as Muslims expect us to bend over backwards for their disease of a religion, although that's more of a religious issue than an immigration one.
