Well, the thought of NOT having a 'real tree' seemed incomprehensible to
us at one time.....
But alas, times change.
We've sort of morphed into the idea of having 3 small artificial 'themed ones' instead. (about 4 feet each, or so...)
The main one is my 'Disney tree' that sits in the den, covered with all Disney
character ornaments, with a small monorail going around the base... What can I say ? I LUV all things Disney ! And there's prolly about....well, more money than I'd like to think about invested in that baby. (DON'T judge me, jasun !

)
Then there's the tree that sits in the bay window that has all clear lights and ornaments from mine and Keith's childhood hanging from it... (This, for some reason, is the one that our cat eyes with the most evil of thoughts.... "Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree.....you're ornaments are history....")
Then, there the really crappy looking one that sits on the lanai, with 'whatever's left' thrown on.....
And, as far as the 'real tree smell' goes.... Stop by Home Depot, or any large Christmas tree lot, and ask for the boughs that they have cut off of other trees....They usually will just give them to you.... Take them home, scatter them around the house, or arrange them in centerpieces...and 'viola' in a few days you'll have that smell you crave all through the house !
(I'm not gay, am I ?
