Shopping is one of the best parts of any vacation for me!

When I was a kid, we used to mostly travel in August, (when my father was given his vacation time), so my mother would always do some amount of back-to school shopping while we were on the road. We got to see many different stores in many different cities. This was back in the days before nearly every department store was a Macy's.

I became fascinated with the various department and discount stores and their similarities and differences. So in any given year, I had clothes that may have came from the Montgomery Ward in Joliet, IL; Younker's in Des Moines; Joslin's in Denver; Burdines in Orlando, Gimbels in Lancaster, or the May Company in San Bernardino. There was also Nichols' Discount City in Fredericksburg, Va, Gibson's in Rawlins, Wyoming; and PN Hirsch in Vandalia, IL.

As an adult, I still love visiting where the local people shop. My visit to Paris included both Primtemps and Galleries Lafayette and in Rome, it was La Rinascente.

When I buy things to bring home (or to give to people) , I try to buy things that are unique to the place I am visiting.

And yes, the browser in me LOVES rummaging through touristy souvenir shops!

I need to start getting keychains again. I have a small collection of rubber ones.
