  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What nationality are you ??

No i'm not
Other peoples are.

No you really are. Ethnicity is more about cultural heritage while nationality is all about the nation you are a citizen of. You can be a British citizen with African (or Asian, or wherever) heritage.

Nationality is commonly used to mean the country of ones ancestry. There are more than one meaning.

That's only because people get confused. Often one's ancestors were citizens of a different nation than one's self. That is why one's cultural heritage is often different than one's nationality. Because one's ancestors came from somewhere else but one's parents, or the individual in question, immigrated to a new nation. Once the individual becomes a citizen (if he/she indeed does), he or she is now a nationalized citizen and that new nation. His/her children will be born in this new nation and it will definitely be their nationality, but their heritage will likely still be from somewhere else as their parents will still practice the customs of their heritage. People can be idiots and get things confused. That confusion can spread, but it doesn't make it correct.

Words mean what people use them to mean. They acquire new and different meanings as they are used in other ways. Language is not carved in stone. The use of the word nationality to mean ancestral origin is too well established to change.

No need to preach.
Those hookup online people ask their fellow Americans or Canadians or British or Australians "what nationality are you" They meant what ethnic background are you.
I know they use it wrong but thats what they meant.

Did you ever stop to think that they might be wondering which country you live in and not the colour of your skin?

I often wondered what color his skin was, especially with that butt world he has.
