What % of your salary do you spend on rent?

Varies by year, but about 5% each for my partner and me, including taxes, utilities, gardener and general maintenance, based on net income.

I'm a home owner, so 0% in rent. However, I have a yearly bill for local services under the 'council tax' demand, plus the house insurance costs. These two items alone form about a fifth of the total household outgoings.
 
You need to figure the tax...even if you own outright, it is what you pay to live there.


You should (ideally) pay no more than 28 percent for rent, etc.
 
The ideal hasn't really applied for some years. Speculation in mortgages, long before the bubble breaking, led to escalating home prices, which in turn led to the permanent inability of many to ever own.

That, in turn, led to landlords having a captive market and gouging rents. Rents have been beyond the 25% level, on average, for many years.

That math also needs to be adjusted for single men, like most gays, who don't have a double income houselhold. To own a home (or rent one) instead of an apartment, it has required two incomes for the average couple.

Around 25% or just over, and I live with roommates who share the cost with me. Looks like many of you guys are doing better than me.

If you go by my base salary, my current rent is 17% and in my new place I'll be paying 21%.

I own my own home and have no mortgage, so I pay 0%.

I have roommates, so only 15% of my income goes to rent.

I pay 18% on lot rent for my mobile home.

Mortgage + homeowner's insurance + property tax = 15% of my monthly take home pay.

And I get around 15%, but I live in a dilapidated old farmhouse.

I am also adding energy costs into it - heating and A/C.

There is no mortgage on it...

Insurance doesn't really count as rent, though, does it? If it did then utilities and upkeep/improvements of the property would also, right? A bank holding a mortgage may insist that the homeowner/borrower maintain insurance coverage, but if there is no bank involved, most likely buying a policy or not is the homeowner's choice.

As for taxes, though, in many situations/places, one never really owns property, just certain rights pertaining to the property's use. If the property taxes are not paid the property will be seized, and the current occupant(s) will be evicted – sort of a hostage situation, really. So, there, paying the taxes is just the same as paying rent to the government(s).

Let's see...... Pay monthly/annually to a company so that, IF something happens they find ways of paying the minimum they can toward that which is "covered"...... Or, leaving a comparable sum of money in an interest bearing account against the possible "catastrophe"........

Yeah, you continue paying somebody else to not fully cover your home/property. Me? I'll continue to earn on what isn't spent. #-o :rolleyes:

In places prone to natural disasters insurance can be prohibitively expensive and some places insurance can be difficult to get.

More well-off than loaded. We bought our house in the aftermath of the financial meltdown, paid all cash and got a very good deal.
 
I was thinking about this again and found it while searching for something else.

My percent has actually went down a little to 32% of my income. I'm in the money now!

Whether it's 34% or 32%, it's still one-third in round numbers. I imagine your other costs have absorbed any small saving on rent.
 
I don't pay rent. I'm squattin across the US. I stay in abandoned homes and trailers, every now again might find a foreclosed mansion. How long I can stay depends on how desperate the sheriff is for handy. If they let me stay a month I even cup the balls. :gogirl:
