  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What price range do you pay for your clothes?

I saw these on the Gucci website and I can't get them out of my mind.
They are absolutely ugly and no-one will recognize the brand anyway when you're walking around with them.

8-20 underwear
14-30 tshirts
50-80 jeans/other trousers
50-80 shirts
120-200 shoes
I found an off the rack suit at half price last yr only 300. For special occasions I'd probably go shopping in the 1200 range for something properly fitted and tailored.

I prefer to buy things that look like they have a chance of lasting and then wear them forever. Often the quality of cheaper items looks so dodgy that I think they're a false bargain.

My budget does not permit me to just go all out on fashion, though I have seen some fantastic sweaters in the 800 and up range. Some fantastic 900 shoes. My sanity doesn't permit it either. But mostly my budget… Hah!

All prices C$

Sir, you have NO idea. I actually have friends (male and female) where the conversation runs:

FRIEND: Did you notice that guy?
ME: Which one?
FRIEND: The one in the Gucci shoes.
ME: (sigh) It's me. You'll have to bring things down to my level.
FRIEND: (heavier sigh) Fine. Did you notice the guy in the bright red shirt with the A&F logo on the front?
ME: Oh, I saw a guy in a red shirt - didn't see if it had an A&F logo, though.
FRIEND: Christ, you're hopeless.
ME: Yup.

Well alright, I DO notice brand names in huge letters on a t-shirt.

And don't give a :bs: about them. But for example jeans that have the brand name on the label hidden under the belt? Who cares? All I see is that you're wearing jeans, not their price tag. Anybody that recognizes brand clothes by their look is a fashion victim \:/

@Lex

That would pretty much describe my reaction in that sort of situation ... fortunately none of my friends appear to take any notice of brand names either.

Unfortunately, some of Glex's friends do take notice. Does that make Glex a bad person, that he would befriend such lowlifes?

No, not at all ... my post was not intended to be disparaging ... merely that as my friends seems as oblivious to branding as I do, that situation would not arise. ](*,)

PS. I didn't describe Lex's friends as 'lowlifes' ... get a grip mary. ..|

I saw these on the Gucci website and I can't get them out of my mind. Gucci crocodile loafers - $5,000.00/pair. If anyone wants to start a collection for me so I can buy these, please feel free.

Go to any Chinatown and you can have the SAME ones for $100.

When I was young, it was $Brother.hand-me-downs. Now, I buy whatever the fuck I want (that fits).

I buy most of my clothing on eBay and in consignment shops... second hand, for the most part, though quite a bit new. And my sense of perspective is a little skewed, I'll spend insane amounts on a costume that I'll only wear once or twice, but skimp on underwear I wear every day. But to give you a rundown:

Suits: I don't own a suit that cost more than $300, not even for costumes. I will buy three-piece suits just to get the vest, though I do sometimes wear the pants too, and will generally spend $80 to $150 on eBay.

Pants: aside from the pants that come with suits, I only wear khakis, and I get them at Old Navy and Kohl's for the most part, anywhere from $15 to $30. I have two pairs of jeans, one Chaps and one Lucky Brand, that I bought in consignment shops for less than $20.

Shirts: I seldom pay more than $35 for a french-cuffed dress shirt, and usually pay around $20. I won't pay more than $25 for a barrel-cuffed shirt, and if I shell out more than ten bucks for a tee-shirt or thermal, it had better say something utterly hysterical on it. Dress shirts mostly come from eBay though I find at Ross and Marshall's as well; tees and thermals mostly come from Gap, Old Navy, and Kohl's.

Sweaters: my weakness, I have so many of them I don't know where to put them all. But again, I like quantity, so I don't spend much per piece. Consignment stores are my favorite venue for them, though eBay, Gap, Old Navy, Ross and Marshall's are also frequent contributors to the collection. And I don't believe I've ever paid more than $50 for a sweater.

Vests: another weakness... I wouldn't spend more than $30 on a sweater-vest, but I will spend well over a hundred for a custom-made waistcoat, and as I said before I'll sometimes buy whole suits just for the vest.

Shoes: I think the most expensive shoes I own are the Dr. Marten's I paid $75 for on sale. No, wait, I own a pair of riding boots for which I paid $250, and I've only worn them three times, always for costumes. But in general I pay around $50 for a pair of shoes.

Underwear: I get 2(x)ist boxer briefs at Marshall's for $5.99 a pair, or Old Navy boxer-briefs for $10 a pack of three. I recently got some Hanes that were on a good sale. I'm not all that picky about my underwear, nobody but me ever sees it.

Socks: I usually wear white gym socks with sneakers, $9.99 for a pack of 6. I also have a lot of kilt-socks, and boot-socks, and argyle socks, and like that... generally around $5 a pair.

Accessories: this is where I go a little nuts... hats are expensive, and I wear hats every day. But the most I've ever spent on one hat was $95, and that was on impulse. I'll usually spend anywhere from $50 to $75. Ties and all that sort of thing, I tend to get at consignment shops, vintage shops, and of course eBay. I think $10 is more than enough for any kind of tie or handkerchief or scarf.

So I think the theme is that I don't like to spend a lot on any one piece, because I like to have lots and lots of pieces. Since I have so many pieces, I don't wear any one piece all that often, so the quality of wear is less important than fit and color. But I still prefer to benefit from other people's spending practices and buy their old and barely-used high-quality stuff on eBay and at consignment stores. I have a Calvin Klein cashmere sweater that I paid $5 for at Out of the Closet... if you're willing to do a bit of trolling about in shops and online, you can find bargains like that.

I think the main point of paying retail is the convenience. You can go into a department store and shell out a thousand bucks for some good basic outfits in one spot, where I'd prefer to spread that over three months and two dozen shops, and get a whole pile of clothes.

Unfortunately, some of Glex's friends do take notice. Does that make Glex a bad person, that he would befriend such lowlifes?

One could argue that it makes me a good person, that I would condescend to befriend such "lowlifes". But then again, I certainly don't consider them such, and I'm assuming neither do you. :)

Sport coats, dress pants, shirts, and shoes I uasaly buy top of the line, but not outrages, underwear whatever is comfortable and reasonable. Work wear on sale except for boots. Everyday wear t-shirts, jeans, shorts, sneakers or sandals, whatever is on sale.

I may be stating the obvious, but have you checked out Target?

Just about all of my pants/jeans, shoes, shirts, and jackets (Winter and Summer), come from Goodwill. I'd shop there even if I wasn't poor, lol..which unfortunately, I am..because I have almost never paid more than $8.00 for anything I have. Most of the clothes I have, were bought from their $1.00 selections, or half off selections. I have TONS of clothes..:)

ON THE CHEAP, ENTIRELY!

If I pay $100 for clothes in an entire year, that's a LOT for me.

Pretty much everything that I wear is thrift-shop stuff. Almost always I'll be seen wearing jeans and a Hawaiian shirt (even in January).

I've actually been very disappointed when I've bought brand-new clothing somewhere, various issues with it falling all apart or the pants pockets "springing leaks" within a few days of use, etc.

Usually if clothing has held together well enough to make it to a thrift shop, it has more life remaining in it. The real shit stuff that falls apart, that gets thrown out before it gets to the thrift shops.

Cheap stuff at Primark does some comfy underpants (£5~£10 for a 3-pack) socks and pajama bottoms (£5), some Asda stuff like tops (£5~£20) and trousers (£10~£25), Marks and Spencers when they have their sales (£10~£30), and for specialist formal wear, I usually head down to Greenwoods (£80+ for 2 piece suits). There's also the factory outlet retailers who do cut price stuff year round.

.
I'd wear that shirt. I'd wear the shit out of that shirt. :D

I actually have. This is my third version of this same shirt. The first one was white, and the second grey. I wore them until they got holes. :)

Lex

i shop only at Ross and TJMaxx, so anywhere from 5-10 for shirts, and 5-25 for pants/shorts/underwear

I just dont like to waste money on brand name clothes when i can get something just as good(if not better) for alot less

My favorite sneakers are a pair of vox shoes from ross, were $15. I recently ordered a pair of vans from the online store and they're a POS, and they costed $50.
