I'm looking for a decent printer, and my budget is $50. I'd like to buy a laser printer, as I'd like to print a lot of word processing documents. I hope to save on ink. and have never owned one before. I've read about them needing "toner", and don't know if their costs match that of an ink printer. What type of ink/laser printer should I get?

I'd recommend a laser as well. You might have to spend more like $100 though. But it's worth it. The cost of laser toner is FAR less than inkjet ink--a mere penny or two per page. The entry level models from Samsung or Brother may seem cheap, but they are actually pretty nice. And the toner's pretty cheap too.
The entry level offerings from other brands fall into the same category as the inkjets (give away the printer, charge a ton for the toner).

Laser. Save some $$ and get a good one with scanner. As you're in NYC check out http://www.jr.com/ or any of the other electronics stores advertising in the Times.

Walgreens for sure. One with knobs that break off easily and the ability to catch any and all liquids spilled on them. Maybe one that will journal for you and post more "what should I" threads.

The simple reality is that the less you spend on your printer, the more you are likely to spend on consumables. A $50 inkjet, or a $100 laser, will have expensive ink/toner.Save up a bit more and buy something decent.
Personally, if money is an issue I recommend using an inkjet printer with an external ink tank. Buy an inkjet printer ($50-$150) and an external ink unit ($100-150). Your overall cost per year will be vastly less than conventional ink or toner (by up to 90%) but the initial cost seems steep. My parent were spending $1000 a year on ink before I bought them one of these - one set of $120 tanks lasts them 2 years!

I'm looking to buy a printer myself. But I want an all in one type that has both wireless and USB printing support. What should I be looking for in terms of specs for these new wireless types? And which brands are more reliable, Canon, Brothers?

I'm a really big fan of Brother printers... they don't embed chips in their ink cartridges, so it makes it a lot easier to buy cheaper third-party ink (as opposed to Canon and Lexmark). over the long-haul, ink is going to cost far more than the initial printer.
by and large, I'd say laser if you're primarily printing in B&W and will never need to photo print, and ink-jet for all-purpose/photo uses.
