What song(s) do you remember most poignantly when you were coming out?

When each of us came out, there was a particular song or two that was, for whatever reason, enormously moving. Perhaps it involved your fisrt closeted love, or it was perhaps shared on the night with the person you first came out to. Maybe it just played and played at your first gay bar that you first went down to for weeks on end. Maybe it was that song you lost your gay "virginity" to, or your first real love.

Here's mine:

I think that the song that best fits the bill for me would be the theatrical versions of "I am what I am", especially the different John Barrowman versions on youtube (that man is a legend, funniest live performer I've ever seen). It wasn't a song I heard for the first time after coming out, but the lyrics really gave me strength to actually do so, despite how incredibly cliched they are :)

Mine is from the same show, La Cage Aux Folles. I bought the original cast album about a month before I came out and listened to it almost nonstop that month. I remember especially the duet "With You On My Arm" and George Hearn and Gene Barry's performance of it was inspiring to my coming out. I thought their portrayal of a gay couple who had been together so long and knew how to cheer each other up was so romantic it made me realize that being gay didn't have to be about sex, clubs, etc. "Song On the Sand", "I Am What I Am", and "Look Over There" were all inspiring, too. It really is a landmark musical if you aren't familiar with it.

I'm an absolute music fiend, devouring music at an insatiable pace. So surely, I must have a ton of songs that remind me of my coming out process.

Nope.

I don't know why that is. For one thing, I tend to simply associate songs with times-and-places. They don't have to "fit". "Lateshift" by Jackopierce? Walking to the grocery store in an unfamiliar town, just as "I Am the Fly" by Wire is me walking along the river to the grocery store when I got back to my hometown. And I listened to Earl Klugh's solo guitar CD so much when I was depressed that it's tough for me to listen to now.

I came out to my friends in 1992 or so, but I don't recall anything egging me on, or making me feel "proud". It was just something I had to do, and I did it.

Ohh good idea, but sadly I don't remember. The strangest part is that I always link songs whit situations or places. Maybe it's due to the quiet scenes where I've came out. Hmmm, but I do remember a song that may be quite related- when I realized all my internal struggle may have been concerned to the fact of exploring my sexuality, and facing this situation. It's Ecstacy-ATB

I'm reminiscing tonight :P

I came out pretty late in life, I was 38 when I realized I had a serious crush on my shift partner but I really new back when I was a kid, just too big of a pussy to do anything about it. After I came out to my wife I spent allot of time on the computer listening to videos and I saw the video for Beautiful by Christina Aguilera, that was the first time I paid any attention to any of her music but I really liked the video, especially the scene of the two guys kissing.

Another song that I kind of obsessed about was Pissing in the river by Patty Smith, absolutely fell in love with everything she ever did after listing to that song.

I missed allot of good music growing up because I was trying to put up a front to hide what I was. Kind of pathetic but that's what happened.

And then there was always this song

I had gay friends, so here was mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPpE_BrX0FM

Up until then it was always [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1B-dsOtcps[/ame]

God help me, it was this:

For such seemingly "straight" music, it's almost a perfect coming out song. It resonated with me, for sure.
