what sports should NOT be in the Olympics ?

Any 'professional' sport, be it soccer, tennis, baseball, basketball... you get my point.

It used to be that Olympians competed on an amateur level until they went professional and their amateur lives were left behind them. It's only been recently that professionals were given amateur status once more so they could compete again and that caused no end of animated discussion. Unfortunately, Brian Boitano was the first to be reinstated as an amateur and lost miserably. I think had he won, there would have been more discussion and pros might have been banned entirely.

Now, they're not even reinstated as amateurs. They simply attend the Olympics as professionals. That, I think, goes against everything the Olympics stand for. I mean, what chance to most countries' amateur basketball teams have against one made up entirely of professional players?

Don't ban the events. Ban the professionals.

ban nothing. the IOC has chosen to have these competitions in. there is a global audience participating in each of these sports, and gymnastics, swimming, etc all how World Championships each year.

Badminton
Table Tennis (Ping Pong)

For that fact, I never liked Volleyball. So, Beach Volleyball is another.

The notion of amateurs-only has an idealistic vibe to it, but let's acknowledge that it also has an elitist component to it as well. After all, the concept was born from an age where professional athletes were considered bourgeois and the olympics were meant to present a more gentlemanly image. I think anyone who pushes themselves harder than anyone ever has in any reasonably recognized sport belongs in the Olympics.

The fact that there is some other championship should have nothing to do with whether something is an Olympic sport or not. After all, nearly all of the Olympic sports do have a world championship each year, though some receive more publicity than others.

But any of those athletes will tell you that there is something special about the Olympics. There's something amazing about being a part of a competition that involves not only your own sport, but a host of others as well. There's something truly humanistic about seeing these athletes competing against each other, knowing that they're all striving for the same goals. It truly shows us that we have so much more in common in our hopes and dreams than we differ in our ideologies.

In short, I don't think any sports need to be excluded.

Now they're just filthy rich and hardly worth the money they're paid.
i wouldnt say that. none of us can do what they do. well most of us cant. they get paid what they do because they are usually the best.

personally i think that speed walking is a pretty sad excuse

As long as you don't understand it. When you learn what's involved in just doing it, why they walk the way they do, you come to appreciate the skill and the race a whole lot more.

It's like curling. It looks like a stupid game until you figure out what they're doing and why.

How come they never show the wrestling yet award medals for it?

All team sports.

All individual sports.

Yep, ban the lot. The Olympics is a huge black-hole of money and effort with no redeeming features that I can see.

-T.

P.S. I would be prepared to make an exception for shove ha'penny, and the three-legged race.

The only sport that receives a major grip from me is beach volleyball I believe the sport to be a joke, and the celebrity given to it is insupportable. Beach volleyball is a hobby sport that is nice in local tournaments and whatnot, to support it on an Olympic level, when there already is a perfectly good collegiate volleyball event, is unnecessary.

All other sports I am more or less okay with. I am miffed they are getting rid of baseball, only because baseball is just as valid as any of the other team sports. You have to have soccer and basketball, they are fine, though I dislike that they pool from professional athletes. Badminton, race-walking, and all those other sports are only pointed out because they are not popular, but they are in fact sports, extremely athletic, and valid. Badminton is a hell of a time if you actually play it. I believe that BMX has a perfectly applicable place in the Olympics, as it reflects a modern discipline of cycling. Just because something is new and innovative does not mean it is not a valid sport. I actually believe that skateboarding would be perfectly okay, as would inline skating. Skateboarding is almost the summer version of snowboarding, and inline is likewise for figure skating.

Some of the sports I would like to see added, in order of importance:

Pankration - The Game of All Powers has been long absent from the Olympiad. It's ancient nature would lend it's modern incarnation to being mixed martial arts, i.e. UFC. Now, it is understandable the trepidation surrounding this sport, especially in the Olympic arena where even boxing goes by amateur rules and not professional, but there is a definite potential for adaptation here, and I would love to, and in fact expect it to be seen given a look-over in the next few Olympiad. (MMA as a socially-accepted sport has only been around for two, or arguably only one summer cycle).

Kickboxing (Possible distinction as 'Muay Thai') - If Pankration does not fly, which I doubt it will, kickboxing must have it's day. If such specialized time-relative combatives such as Tae-Kwon-Do and Judo can have their place, general kickboxing (or Muay Thai, even) should as well. The facility is already there: The boxing ring. Kickboxing as a sport is huge around the world, and they are left out while boxers have all the opportunity.

Cricket - I do not know why this isn't a sport, honestly, how huge it is around the world. It just seems like one of those 'duh' inclusions. It has already been a sport, but experienced only one Olympiad.

Climbing - Another perfectly Olympic-level sport that is neglected is rock climbing. I think it should be given a run as at least a demonstration sport one cycle.

Bridge is recognized by the IOC as an Olympic sport, so is chess. They are simply not part of the games at this time, but are always eligible.

I want Bulldog (A.K.A. Red Rover), Dodge Ball and Tag to be included in the Olympics...

you know, an excuse to bring back kids games...

Tug-of-war is another IOC sport. Dodgeball would actually have some premise... if you take into consideration that what we hold as 'sport' can be about as primitive as it gets in essence (guys running around in circles, hitting each other in the head, or basically glorified grab-ass) everything is pretty much on equal ground.

The only thing that makes it 'sport' and not just fun is that there is skill involved. Someone can always run around the circle faster, people figure out how to stop people from hitting them in the head all the time and learn how to hit them better, and people get really good at grab-ass. Someone could get really good at tag, too. Give it the equal pomp and circumstance, as well as some kind of league, and anything looks official.

Honestly, I am waiting for Olympic Rock-Paper-Scissors.

All of the horse events. The horses do most of the work anyway. Besides, anything that requires the participant to wear a jacket & tie is NOT a sport.

Beach Volleyball- isnt that something you do on holiday.....? deff not an Olympic sport/
