Interesting article in this weekend's Wall Street Journal(Jan 20-21,2007). the weekend interview with Joseph Lieberman ny Kimberly A Strassel.

Quoting from the last two paragraphs:

HTML:
He admits he frets that foreign policy is the "Achilles heel" of his political side, and that "unless the Democratic Party can prove to the people that as a party it is not either pacifist or isolationist, but willing to stand up and protect the security of the American p[eople, then we're goingto have trouble electing a president."

His own Democratic heroes are 'Truman and Kennedy."The Kennedy inaugural was the single . . . speech that brought me into public life. Those famous words Pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.' That's what it has meant to me to be a Democrat." Horatio's challenge now is to convince his party-and more than a few Republican's- to also remember just who they are.

So I ask fellow JUB members what they think that foreign policy will be??

I envision something like

"Strength thru negotiation/dialogue"

the idea that by engaging our enemies we will somehow create bridges and common ground

"Strength thru bank accounts"

cutting off funds to enemies

Everything except actual military engagement

I think in theory both are outstanding. The problem with negotiating with enemies is that they have to want to also. And sometimes negotiating with them shows them that you don't have the stones to really do anything should they threaten you.

JFK was awesome

His doctrine would have played well in today's world

Our successful invasion of Iraq would have been followed up by a better plan for peace.

My 2 cents

nothing personal

I agree with Chance...

Finding common ground and building bridges will work WAY better than the devisive international politics we've seen in this administration.

The biggest problem "internationally" I've seen is that after 9/11 when ALL Americans and MOST of the world was ready for us to KICK ASS -- we alienated ourselves from those that could have helped us most.

It will be a mess. Bush will sabotage his last year perfectly to make the Democrat President have to clean up after his disaster:

Expedited phased withdrawl with peace talks with Mid-East nations to control the oil fields while Iraq falls into oblivion. Probably some corporate OPEC agreement to keep those oil fields safe and flowing. I don't think any foreign or local power is going to stop the civil war.

Ultimately, Iraq will go into massive bloodshed where one of two things happens. One, the country splits between the factions or two, it's united under an Islamic dictatorship like Afghanistan.

^not to be too cynical but whichever faction emerges, they'll be more than willing to sell oil to the United States. Revenue from Persian rugs is good but oil money will still be needed to finance their government.

Democrats - Foreign Policy

The 2 just don't go together well.

The foreign policy for the dems will be ignore the threats posed by terrorists, surrender in Iraq, and try to go back to the pre-9/11 mindset that was nice to live in, but not very smart for the long-run.

BushRepublicans - Foreign Policy

Those 2 haven't exactly been a winning combination either.

question?

Are the lack of posts in this thread, a reflection of no one knows what the Democratic party's foreign policy is. Isn't that the same isues we are facing everyday in the U.S. Lots of criticism but no real solutions put forth?

I think the Dems have a real opportunity to create their vision (not seen yet) - no reason for it to be "soft" - none whatsoever

Imagine if - they take the White House

and then

They are Hawkish on foreign policy - hawks with brains

that's what I want

I want to chase the enemy, not have them chase

If we were just smarter about it

I think this is an opp for the Dems to kick ass totally - to be the party that is not weak on defense - contrary to what the Republican line has been - they gotta shove out the "America sucks" crew - and the extremists on this one

And be responsible

I for one think there are a lot of tough Dem senators - who could be good leaders on foreign policy. If they just keep the negatoids at bey

I think it will be a return to the more traditional, less confrontational, foreign policy of our past in which diplomacy is not a sign of weakness. It will be the end of the Bush policy of pre-emption. The next time we engage anyone in war it will be because they have attacked us or one of our allies.

Those who we cannot talk to we will try to isolate and sanction which worked pretty well with Saddam.

Fear will no longer be the basis of policy. Instead of worrying about what others might do to us we'll let be known what will happen to them should they attack us.

The most economically successful countires in the world are not those with huge oil resources but huge intellectual resources and the success of countries like China and India pose a problem for countires less well off as citizens of such countries can fairly ask if they can do it why not us.

To be successful and rich means being apart of the global economy which is difficult to do if you're against us. The democrats need to keep us engaged and not give in to protectionist temptations.

Our economic might is enough to ensure victory against those who dislike us, we need not use our military power.

We didn't defeat communism with bombs, we simply waited them out and once again Time is on our side.
