I'd make the white rice and pinto beans. Do you have butter? Put some of that in. Delicious.

if all you had in your kichen cupboards, and/or pantry

1. Pinto Beans, Dried
2. Split Peas, Dried
3. Lentils, Dried
4. Brown Rice
5. White Rice
6. Seasonings
7. Olive Oil

and no money left for groceries til payday?

I have a couple of ideas, do you have any fresh or canned veggies at all? Any canned tuna fish or protein outside of the beans? Canned tomatoes?

If not, I still have an idea for a bit of a goulosh of sorts.

Knock on a friend's or neighbor's door tell them what you have, and ask what they have on hand. I smell split pea soup!

PS Don't even tell me if you drink or smoke. Don't make me come over there! ;)

damn...... i thought i had something.

shit.....

i guess, boil the rice and eat that shit.

i don't even know what a pinto bean is.

i would just do what i did when i was 19 and go get groceries from my step mother's house.

Beans, lentils and rice are the best staples you can have in my opinion. You've got the fixins for good basic nutrition already. You'll need to supplement your diet in the long run but you can enjoy what you've got for awhile.

What seasonings do you have, specifically? We can probably think of ways to use these to better effect if you can tell us.

Find just a little salt if you can, though. You'll want this to add to your cooked lentils and beans. It'll make your meals much, much better and will add to the pleasure of your dining moreso even than the use of spices or olive oil.

Your asshole is your money maker sale it for 50 dollars and blow it on red lobster!

Great. With that repertoire of seasonings you'll actually be able to mix and match and make a variety of meals even from your limited basics. White rice sometimes, brown rice others.

Cook the pinto beans until just tender, then leave enough liquid in the pot to keep moist. Use the tomato sauce with these now, and add some of the spices, a pinch of cumin, black pepper and chile powder. Simmer to bring the flavors together.

The split peas will make a simple soup with the rosemary and garlic powder. Try to cook it a day ahead of time to maximize flavor. A dash of the paprika and a drizzle of your olive oil will finish it off.

The lentils would be my favorite. Add a little spoonful of the turmeric while you cook them. Then, do as millions of Indians do and finish the dish (to be served with rice, of course) with a spiced oil. This will really stretch flavor! Just heat a bit of oil in a small pan with small pinches of the cumin, coriander and whichever curry powder appeals to you. Don't burn the spices, just warm them until they are fragrant. Pour the oil over the lentils. Yum!

Hi MikeyLove, at the risk of giving you information you already know. There are two congregate meal sites that are open to the community. Casa Maria and DePorres Inc/Caridad. I got those names from Community Food Bank's site. They might have other information that can be of use to you.

Mikey, it sounds like the guys here have given you some good ideas.

I was going to say to make two pots of soup. One with the lentils and one with the split peas. Cook them down and season (since you have so many) to taste. You can eat one soup, and put the other in the fridge for a little variety tomorrow, until you get to the food pantry on Monday. I like my lentil soup over white rice, and you can eat it with the split pea soup too. You said that you have bread, that always goes good with soup too.

Monday will come soon enough.....

mikey- i get the concept of "dried beans - in big bags - cheap - but unfortunately - i don't always have the time it takes to cook them --

for times such as this -- you should get your butt to Walmart - and buy some -- also cheap --- cannned soups - with lower sodium, of course.
That way - when you're running low on cash - you can pour a can of soup over a cup of rice and feel like you actually ate something..

we have a Brugger's Bagel shop that i visit a few minutes before closing time (7:oo pm.) they have "day old" bagels in bags of 6 for way less than 1/2 price - but at closing time - -sometimes they say - - take an extra bag (OR TWO) - we're just gonna throw them out !!! good deal - then you can freeze 'em

Find out when your nearest store marks down meat and produce in the evenings and get thee to the market then. Just today I got some extra lean ground beef for $1.49/lb. and a lovely Ribeye steak for $2.49/lb. Your stamps will go much farther. I sometimes see ground pork for .99 a pound when marked down...makes a great meat sauce for pasta.

Also check the day old bakery rack (half price or better) and also the scratch and dent bin.

Don't know if Arizona allows it, but watch for 'Grade B' eggs. The only difference is they have been repackaged at the store because one or more in the dozen was broken. I get them all the time for anywhere between .64 and .89 cents a dozen.

What's your point? Return it!

I envy you. Being raised in the rural Southeastern United States, pinto beans were and are a common staple in kitchens. I've never liked them. I am just not a "beans and cornbread" kind of guy. Although, I do like some cornbread on occasion but not in typical Southern fashion. I like it with peanut butter mixed with blackstrap molasses. It sounds weird but is really good. If I have beans, I prefer black beans, lentils and garbanzo but not with peanut butter and molasses. :p

that's word,

i learned within the first year of living in florida to not be at anyone's house around dinner time, because they will offer you a plate.

it's disrespect to say no,

and they will serve you something that will have you taking insulin shots by the end of the week.

for the past 3 years. dinner parties at my house ONLY.

^ OK, I get that (about throwing away food). I was in Wal Mart a few days ago and noticed the white and brown are priced the same. Also, whole wheat pasta and the white version are the same ($.99). The whole wheat was priced more until now but for some reason (demand?) there is no longer a price premiun for real food, so we poor folk can do OK by shopping at Wal Mart of all places. Anyway, good luck to you.

If I got hungry with no cash I'd go right to Whole Foods and sample everything and dare a bitch to say something.

lmao @ChickenGuy

That's immediately what I thought of when I read the thread title.

See what i'd do is go up to that woman who lives in my house, put on a sad face and say, "Mum, can i have some munnys?"
