What would you do if you read in the paper that your friends father had died, but your friend hasn't mentioned it to you. Would you wait for you friend to say something about it to you, or would you say something to him? My friends dad died and I know about it but he hasn't said anything to me yet. Out of respect for him I am waiting for him to say something first, because I don't know how he is dealing with it. But I don't know if waiting is the right thing.

ya you should say something first. its really not his job to tell each of his friends personally right away. he might be having a real hard time and isnt thinking clearly, and Im sure telling friends isnt the number 1 thing on his priority list. Its the right thing to do by saying something first and just let him know you care. IMO.

I would say I heard your dad past away and give him your condolances to him and his family

You come across as a really caring friend,do you know how their relationship was
because that could have some bearing on why he has not mentioned anything ?
Though i have to agree with the other posters telling guy,s is probably not his number one priority just now.
I think that if i was in your position maybe a quiet word saying that you are so sorry for his loss is the way to go.
Wishing you the best at such a difficult time. (*8*)

Call him. Express your sympathy and ask what you can do for him, calling people, etc. If you know his family check in with them as well.

At the passing of a loved one, their thought process is out of wack with emotions and are not thinking clearly.
I would not wait,
So I would reach out to him and just tell him you just found out and are sorry for his loss, ask him if there's anything you can do or needs. And are there for him. A card, potted plant, or some food would be a nice offering.

I'm sure he did not intensionally not tell you, give him space and check in on him to see how he is doing.
That's being a good humane being!!
