Everytime people report another they are taking over the judgment and punishment, to the extent that they get pleasure from knowing that another person was made to suffer, and a greater personal gratification after having contributed to that suffering by reporting or sharing their opinion on the person's guilt.
The person may have done wrong, and we may have seen it, but if we judge them (whether we report it or not) then we have done a greater evil than the person who did the original deed.
Respectfully...horsecrap! I hope to God that if I'm ever attacked by someone that the bystanders who witness the attack do not share your opinion. If you witness someone doing wrong/unlawful acts and remain silent, you contribute to the crime. As another poster pointed out, shoplifting hurts all consumers as it passes the loss of revenue on to us in the form of higher costs. It also hurts the business person who is trying to make a living from selling goods. Reporting people who do such a thing not only helps consumers and business owners, but it also often helps the shoplifters, many of whom suffer from a compulsive need to take things and an unhealthy need to be caught and stopped.
I've reported people in the past for stealing, and would do so again in a heartbeat. While there may be consequences on my soul in the way you look at the situation, I KNOW the consequences on my soul if I stand by and compromise what I know to be the right thing just because I would rather not get involved.
