This year and last it seems they are dying in large groups.

I don't think it's a matter of more people dying. I think it's quite consistent, but I don't know any actual yearly numbers. I think it's more that it is noticed when several famous people die in a relatively short period of time.

I found this by CNN which charts celebrity deaths by category each year since 2006:
http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/30/entertainment/worst-year-celebrity-deaths-trnd/index.html

I've never really got into the 'dying in threes' phenomenon. I mean, when do you start counting? I mean, Jerry Lewis died today (which, I'm guessing, is the reason for this thread). But, is he the first, second, or third?

To be clear this thread is mostly a joke, but this is something I have heard most of my life.

Anyways, besides Lewis, Dick Gregory and Sonny Landham also died since yesterday. Seems like a few more died a few days ago before that.

edit: Nice link.

Superstitions either need selective facts to reinforce them, or imperiously ignorant people like the US president to promote in the absence of any evidence.

How many weddings were doomed by seeing the bride in her dress before the wedding? Is there a gay corollary?

What do the spine surgery centers say about cracks in the surrounding sidewalks?

I recall that the superstition is that people die in threes, not necessarily celebrities. The superstition probably predates celebrity-ism.
