So the free e-mail provider I was using is now 'just gone' (as in it shut down)
Thus I need a new place for e-mail...

The absolute requirements are must be free and support both POP & SMTP (I'd be using a e-mail program to access, so web-based does no good for me) .. thats it :) I don't care about spam filters or other such extras as I'd just disable them anyway.

Gmail does everything you've mentioned, and it isn't going to go out of business anytime soon.

Yep I second Gmail, it's the best out there way better than Microsoft's Outlook / Hotmail.

His post sounds like he was using javabit. If so, he certainly doesn't want to use it. Javabit was designed as a gmail replaced, but with more privacy.

- Gmail.com if you don't care about NSA and privacy
- Fastmail.fm if you're willing to pay for a nerdy service with lots of options

Thanks for the info guys.
Gmail is one of the ones I'd like to avoid.
(I didn't know it allowed POP/SMTP - thought it was web-based only) well with that I'd keep it as it would be a last resort LOL

It was something with a very similar name - just replace the 'J' with an 'L'
