My wife is a cake person.
My mom is a pie person.
My palate loves both -

We have a Royal Tropic Aroma 3-layer Spice Cake w/ Mocha Butter Cream Frosting (BUTTER, NOT Crisco)!
Also a great Yellow Cake that we use either w/ Chocolate/Mocha Frosting, or Whipped Cream and Fresh Strawberries.
And, A wonderful Chocolate Cake that we have with Vanilla Frosting.
Carrot - with or w/out nuts, pineapple inside. Cream Cheese frosting.

On the Pie side - you name it.
Apple
Fresh Peach
Fresh Strawberry
Fresh Wild Blueberry
Cherry
Pineapple (Great w/ Cheddar Cheese)
Pumpkin
Rhubarb
Chocolate Cream

Cake, German chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting. I just creamed thinking about it! :eek: Pies seem too sweat to me.
 
As for "German" Cakes, I'm partial to Dobos Torte, a la family secret recipe for the chocolate frosting.

It also has a Caramel top.

Also...cup cakes are better than individual pies.
One of the biggest problems I have with pies is maintaining an acceptable crust-to-filling ratio, and individual pies have WAY too much crust. Turnovers are even worse. With cupcakes, however, it's much easier to maintain an acceptable icing-to-cake ratio. (Of course, I firmly believe that there's no such thing as too much icing.)
 
Love a thin, FLAKY crust with ample filling.

Turnovers are a different category - the puff pastry, if done correctly, is very good.

PIE! More flavourful, moister, more savoury, more variety.

Cake can be good but it is far more hit-and-miss and more likely to be too sweet, too dry, or too monotonous.
