A friend of mine suprised me with a laptop [ its a late birthday present ] and I was so thrilled because it has Windows Vista on it,now my question is,whats so special about Vista? Anyone care to tell? This inquiring mind wants to know.

Ps: it's the home edition.

After 5 years, I would hope it is more stable and secure....but reviews of Vista isn't stellar and most people need to upgrade hardware to make it work.

the gui is a sign into the right direction - compared with vistas xps seems to belong wayyyy into the past.

but if you are not interested in such things, xp is still very fine too.

I was just trying to find a diffrence,it seems to be working well with me for now. I wonder if I could get photoshop on it.

i have windows vista ultimate to really there is nothing special about it you just get a upgrade and you get free spyware protection and virus protection personally i like the backround pictures that come with it i really dont use it that much i use my windows xp

I hate vista. It stops programs all the time and says, for example, "internet explorer has stopped working" and will restart it. For NO reason! Its stupid. I think its less stable then XP. I have to restart my pc once a night every night because it freezes and I can't do anything. Its not my PC, i have a 4.2 rating, so thats not it.

that is IE's problem not vista's and why are you not using firefox anyway ;)

Firefox is the best, any platform.
I'm using it on my macbook with os x 10.4.9.

Your experience with Vista seems to be a fairly common one, ducka_dork. The editor-in-chief of PC Magazine, Jim Louderback, was in the news this past Friday, venting his frustrations with Vista. He said basically the same thing you just did.:

"The litany of what doesn't work and what still frustrates me stretches on endlessly. I could go on and on about the lack of drivers, the bizarre wake-up rituals, the strange and nonreproducible system quirks, and more. But I won't bore you with the details. The upshot is that even after nine months, Vista just ain't cutting it. I definitely gave Microsoft too much of a free pass on this operating system: I expected it to get the kinks worked out more quickly. Boy, was I fooled! If Microsoft can't get Vista working, I might just do the unthinkable: I might move to Linux."

Also, I was surprised to see Acer's president, Gianfranco Lanci, blast Vista so aggressively in his interview with The Financial Times of Germany on July 23. It is most unusual for hardware companies to criticize Microsoft the way Dell and Acer have recently. Lanci was almost as scathing about Vista as was Louderback.:

Lanci said the operating system was riddled with problems and gave users and businesses no reason to buy a new PC, according to the report. Taiwan-based Acer is the world's fourth-largest PC manufacturer, after HP, Dell and Lenovo.

"The whole industry is disappointed with Windows Vista," Lanci said.

Despite the long wait between Windows XP and Vista, the latest operating system still lacks maturity, he said. "Stability is certainly a problem," he said.

Users are voting with their feet, Lanci said, so that the Vista launch has had the smallest impact on PC sales of any version of Windows in the history of PC manufacturing. He added the situation didn't look likely to change in the next six months.

I was thinking about buying a new PC with Vista myself, but, with all these prominent people saying stuff like that about Vista, I've decided to wait a year or so, to see if they can get the bugs worked out.

Well im not going to bash it Noelie!!!

Its great because..

It looks better.
I hear its safer!
Its making people have to buy better computers, which is good!
It has new stuff, i.e. photoviewer!
And seems quicker on nearly all things!
Plus just so much nicer than tacky Apple!
And despite what others say stuff works with Vista!
And I only have Vista Basic! So the others come with more!

Most bad things about it seemed to have been fixed or have never happened to me in first place!

I finally upgraded to vista and I will say that I like the new GUI interface. MS is improving on some of the gui aspects of Windows and making it "prettier". However, it is a new operating system and as such it is riddled with bugs and compatibility problems.

However, these are problems that will be corrected over time. Windows NT was completely incompatible with 90% of software before Windows 2000/XP came around and now look... everything is comp with the NT core code. I will admit, however, that some of the bug fixes are taking an unexpectedly long time to be distributed.

And get this on Wikipedia Microsoft will be releasing vista service pack 1 in 2008 so most of the errors will be fixed finally although i do like what they did to WMP 11 the new Areo skin is cool.

Personally, my favorite feature is the instant search. I love being able to type in the first few letters of a program or any file on my computer and I can open it in less than a second. I also love Vista Media Center. It's the best UI I've ever seen for recording TV on the computer and just makes things so easy. Also, it's actually faster on my machine than XP was since I have 2GB of RAM. I hate using XP now cause I keep hitting start and typing, yet it wont work.
