ffmpeg can do ANYTHING

but the handling most likely isn't something for the average user.

apart from that "super" used to be super, i haven't used it in a long time though

Are you wanting to burn stuff to dvd? If so, I use starburn...it is a freeware program and does convert almost anything to the proper format for dvd.

Avidemux can do everything you require. It is free, cross-platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux), and open source.

But it is a complex, powerful program with an associated learning curve. It's not especially difficult, but you have to be willing to learn how to use it.

(BTW, I would be very surprised if Avidemux does not use ffmpeg as the underlying engine beneath its graphical interface).

I recently deinstalled Super. It does the job fairly well and is essentially a GUI for FFMpeg, but it's just annoying to use.

Too complicated for me.

Thanks but it looks like I may be passing on your suggestion if it has a learning curve

If you just need something incredibly simple, you might do well with an on-line video converter. You upload your videos to the site, they do the conversion, then you download the result (or they email you a link to your converted file). There are quite a number of them available now, and they are (mostly) free. But you cannot generally use these with files greater than ~100 MB, unless you are willing to subscribe (i.e., pay) for an account.
