  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What's the point in accumulating...

you can't play with your worldy possessions if you don't exist.
But during my lifetime, and once I'm dead, I can't care what happens to the stuff or what others do with it because I don't exist anymore.

So people collect things because Consumerism Is Good™ and because they're hoarders.

I've spent most of my adult life buying books to read, and not all of them are fiction. I've got stuff on anglo-saxon English to icelandic and Japanese. Since I have a kid, I hope he will take some pleasure in the science and language stuff I also have.

So, rather than for me, they're there for another generation.

You want to know why - because I can. That is why we all work to make money to spend the money that we make.

I rarely deprive myself of creature comforts when I want them, but honestly, I hardly need them. The people around me who constantly strive to have what's bigger, better, new and improved, seem to have more stress. Keeping up with the Joneses and maintaining all the gadgets, etc. is a big hassle, one which I am happy to not have.

That's not to say I don't live a comfortable existence. I have a newish car, a shiny fast laptop, plasma TV, Blu Ray player, Wii, Apple TV and other gadgety things, but I don't have the need to run out and buy the newest toy the moment it comes to market. When I can afford it and when I feel the time is right for me, I'll get it, but I can certainly live without most of them.
